The EU Migrant Crisis

I'm all for saving these poor people that are truly displaced by war and are in real need, but i do believe ISIS will use this crisis to infiltrate europe, we have to be careful.......

if they didn't want to go to germany or uk or sweden, we would not be having this discussion in this thread. Sure majority of them are in turkey and Lebanon, there is just as many trying to go to europe. All the non sytrian migrants from africa and elsewhere want to go to western europe. Even migrants in france want to go to the UK. Nothing wrong with france, well relatively, nothing wrong with the place. Nice food, beaches and women.

I said never mind as you were talking about Muslim economic migrants (Not sure what an issue these are?), we're currently talking about Syrian refugees

An entirely different matter

This is history repeating itself, persecuted peoples have a habit of traveling north until they can go no further.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-17740638

"For many thousands of years, migrants could move no further west. Scotland was the end of many journeys."

"The explanation is simple. We are a people on the edge of beyond; on the end of a massive continent. Peoples were migrating northwest; and they couldn't get any further. We have collected them."

yeah!

oh or that you might speak english (and not french)
oh or that you might have family or friends here
oh or that there are more jobs here

but yeah the only reason!

So it's not just about seeking asylum and being safe then. Glad we cleared that up.

These people simply want to come here for a better future.

Now the question is: is it Europe's job to take people who want a better future, to take them from the 3rd world countries and house them here? We can keep them safe without re-settling them here.

Btw, aren't 1 in 5 of these people completely illiterate? Not sure how true that is, but these ME war-torn countries aren't big on education are they, esp for girls. I would imagine that the number of English speakers is very, very small.

The media will always interview these people because it makes us think, "Oh, he's just like us!" They won't interview the women in full-length burkhas who can't speak a word of English, and who have no chance of getting a job here. It's just another example of media manipulation. Interview the people who sound like us; pretend they all are.

Well, I can see our shared responsibility within Europe can come into this - also, I'm not sure there is any requirement for them to seek refuge in the first safe country? I think this article answers that point

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/libertycentral/2010/sep/21/claim-asylum-uk-legal-position

Your article pretty much confirms that not only is it an international principle, buts its EU rules. An asylum seeker must seek asylum in the first safe country. If they do not, we are entitled to send them back to that safe country.

And how can we possibly have a shared responsibility when no shared decisions have been made? Germany decided to open the floodgates all on its own.

And yet the most comprehensive DNA testing of the British Isles to date indicates that we are a distinct population. We of course have shared links to the continent, but the idea that we are uniquely a nation of immigrants is complete nonsense.

They are not that different than the ones camping out in france by the uk border.

The point is that once they leave turkey they are economic migrants and not refugees any more. Thus why they want to go to germany and sweden and the uk and not stay in greece or france. Many do stay in greece and france.

For two years in Istanbul, she enjoyed a comfortable life. Nour found work in a hair transplant salon, and later with Turkish state TV. She learnt Turkish, went horse-riding and dyed her hair blonde for the summer.

Now she wants asylum in sweden?

Out of interest, what's wrong with being anti-islam? Or anti-anything that's incompatible with our culture?

because
1) its daft to hate millions of people based on some crazies
2) because i reject the premise that these people are "incompatible"
3) because "our culture" is impossible to define and therefore "defend" in that way
4) because if anything "out culture" is a construct of many countries and cultures and people - and is therefore intangible and constantly changing and any concept of sticking a flag in a particular point in its history and saying "thats british culture" well is already too late and its moved on and changed again so bad luck

People trying to escape unstable/poor countries? A never-ending torrent.

Never ending? So the moment someone leaves, another is immediately born to replace them? And that's not even taking into accound the thousands killed.

Even the Christians and the Jews? (Syria is a secular country like the UK, not an Islamic country, that's what ISIS are fighting to change).

The Jews would have no problems settling in Israel. Because, unlike Qatar or Saudi Arabia, Israel will let their brothers into their country.

As for the Christians, their culture is not at odds with our own. They would most likely integrate and not become a security risk. Some would, of course. Mental health issues are not exclusive to any one religion. Percentage-wise it would be far fewer, however. Since their religion would not drive them to commit acts of terror.

If I had to leave my country due to war to start again - I would head for the country where id have the best chance of getting a new life, personally I would head for France (at least in the short term) because i have relatives and friends there

Yes - any future where they dont get barrel bombed by their own government or beheaded by ISIS is a better one id imagine.

Better future relative to other EU states. As you said, Turkey or Hungary or Poland would be better than what they have now. And would be safe.

But it isn't about safety or a better future, its about the 'best' future they think they can get. And they are being handed out places in Germany, and now the Germans want us to hand out places in this country.

The EU came up with a workable solution where refugees would be shared fairly across Europe. The UK government refused to back it.

Don't blame Germany for this.
