The EU Migrant Crisis

We can believe and hope for what we want.

You can hope for whatever you wish.

But when actually trying to do something, belief and hope should take a back seat to the cold, hard reality of the day.

Belief and hope won't guarantee these people a better future even if they get here. Nor will it ensure the cohesion of our society in years to come.

Where there's a will there's a way, there is no will to help these people that is the real issue.

Make a petition.

I think Billie has a fair point. We elected a government in May with two issues at the top of the electorates concerns - the economy and immigration.

I strongly suspect the 400,000 or so that have signed a petition to help these people are a drop in the ocean compared to the millions who voted for the anti-immigration platform of the current government.

Clocking up very fast at over 1 a second and ends Feb 25 2016!

That will hit 1million +. ;)

What use is will if there's no freakin' money.

Let the people with the will and the funds donate their own money, or have them in their own homes at their own expense.

Why doesn't the govt set up a fund so that people who wish to can donate? Then use that fund to pay for all this.

Probably because the people are really vocally pro-immigration just assume it can be paid for with tax income, and wouldn't actually be interested in donating their own hard earned.

you think it will only be a couple of hundred thousand?!

i predict in 5 years at least 1.5m

There are over 7 million displaced within Syria IIRC with 4 million already left - by the end of the year the population is predicted to be half what it was ~18 months ago with upto 12 million displaced by the end of 2016 and largely leaving Syria for the west and that is just Syria. Palestine is projected to implode over the next few years, several North African countries are fast collapsing with the expectation 10s of million likely to be leaving over the next 5 years.

I still don't think they'll starve with 1.5m extra refugees here.

The UK's puplation increased by 1.5 million between 2010 to 2013 - my kids didn't go hungry then.

biggest issue is that there are more of them with money... the majority are in camps in neighboring countries... tis the ones with money who can pay for the people smugglers/boats etc.. If we're going to take people into the UK then it should be selected people from the camps around Syria not people who are in camps in France etc..

We don't live in the UK to exist on nutrition alone?

I am well fed but it now takes weeks to get a doctors appointment and months for a dental appointment. Another 1.5mil and I will be dead before I get to see a doctor.

Your mad as they come.

Yeah 1.8m in Lebanon alone but they are already seeing the effects of it - thing is its only getting worse and before long the camps won't be able to cope etc. in 2014 the numbers rose 50% above the previous 10 year average and the proportion of refugees that could return home reduced by ~75%, 2015 figures are projected to be even grimmer let alone 2016.

That's the response the EU should have had, the response Britain needs now.

FAO amigafan - I just happened to stumble across this list and thought of you. Are you sure your area can really afford even more poor and vulnerable people?

What are people in those areas deprived of? Xbox Ones and 15 plate Rangerovers?
