The EU Migrant Crisis

Well their one-child policy would indicate that they feel they are over-populated.

A country's ability to sustain its pop is determined by a number of factors. Its not just available land and food supply.

Any country where a significant % of the people are living in poverty is over-populated. Either because the country can't sustain its pop, or because the economy has no need of the extra workers, or the govt doesn't want them...

As has been said, we shouldn't be aiming to fill the world with as many human beings as we possibly can before people would start to starve. Such a simplistic view of how many humans the Earth can sustain is quite absurd.

I don't need to add to this side discussion but yes, someone stated it already.

The population a country can sustain doesn't only depend on land and space, its infrastructure, jobs, transport, welfare, healthcare etc....
The NHS already struggles meeting the demands of the current population. Introducing more people will just inevitably stretch the NHS further... that is just life.
We can't welcome anyone and everyone with open arms.

And all of you referencing countries like china, Taiwan etc you do realise right those places are really not that nice to live in? and they don't have healthcare and welfare systems for the most part. I've said it before and i'll say it again..........

Ralph pls go.

Hungary not taking the threat lying down:-

"Tough new powers have been issued by the Hungarian government to deal with the growing migrant crisis amid fears the country could be hit by terror attacks linked to the influx of refugees."

"3,800 troops descended on Hungary's border with Serbia this morning to provide live border guards."

It begins... proceed to "incident".

What are you saying that link proves?

They still have in place a policy which aims to reduce births, and hence population growth.

The doesn't prove of course that they are over-crowded, but it proves that you cannot grow faster than a given rate for which the country is prepared.

Growth beyond that rate would lead to becoming over-crowded, due to lack of facilities, jobs, houses, etc.

Not just available land as some activists would have you believe.

if they felt overpopulated they would not be relaxing the rules, and also they have always been able to have more than one child if you are connected, have money of have the children overseas and then go back.

The policy was ill-thought out, but it was rightly made...unfortunately Chinese culture favors males like most cultures do/did, thus girls were killed to get around the consequences of a second child.

This means that there are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many men in Chinese youth, which i suppose would have been useful for maintaining pension capacity if not for the difference in population between the generations.

that's partly true but mainly for the peasants, the elite and rich people have been having many kids for decades, but yes they have more issues with to many men than over population as they have a massive land mass.

Like I said, they are actively and deliberately slowing population growth, so that they can keep pace with infrastructure and the like.

Uncontrolled growth would outpace the country's ability to provide for its population - hence they would by any reasonable definition be overcrowded.

Does anyone read properly these days?

I know I'm cherry picking one comment but Taiwan does have National Health Insurance and it's health care system is among the best performing in the world and also one of the lowest in cost to administer. Taiwan also has a comprehensive welfare system - it might not be quite up to UK standards but within the next 5 years I'm sure the Tories will correct that. Workers rights have a way to go to catch up to the UK but that's fine as the Tories will drag us down to that level as well.

Overall, Taiwan is an awesome place to live.

Do some research before posting - it might save you posting rubbish.

Awesome and yet... still in the crosshairs of a rapidly growing superpower, so no, once again you ignore the future.

;)

China has no welfare / healthcare.

Cherry pick all you like, Taiwan is puny and 1/3rd of the population of the UK. You can't keep referencing random countries in order to solidify your point that immigration is somehow a good idea. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Taiwan is a totally different country and NOTHING to do with the UK. And what do they have to do with the situation facing the UK? it's not exactly Taiwan opening the flood gates.

Yes it does.

Welfare
Universal Health Care

Welfare reforms since the late 1990s have included unemployment insurance, medical insurance, workers’ compensation insurance, maternity benefits, communal pension funds, individual pension accounts, universal health care, and a carbon tax.

A law approved February 2013 will mandate a nationwide minimum wage at 40% average urban salaries to be phased in fully by 2015.

Did you fail your Uni degree? Because you seem incapable of even doing the most basic research.

Yeah but what I mean is healthcare isn't exactly like the NHS is it, and china is rife with poverty.

Again making the point, how can people keep comparing the UK to random countries in order to somehow justify immigration.

I just don't see the need to look it up really if I'm being honest. As I said what do any of these countries have to do with the UK? The whole debate stopped right there for me and I don't feel the need to go further the whole thing is a bit of a moot point.

Have you taken in those Syrian refugees yet? Oh wait no...

What are you doing your degree in again and at what uni?

Look at you getting all confrontational when your comments are pulled up as being male bovine excrement.

Interactive Media Design @ Lancaster (can't find the Lancaster prospectus but the linked one is 80% the same but we have more coding/database stuff replacing the marketing guff - xml, c#, php etc.).

I'm looking forward to seeing what you're going to do with that info.

Their welfare system is nowhere near as developed as the UK. Otherwise lets face it, it wouldn't be Europe all the migrants would be heading for. No I'm just getting about as confrontational as you are when people press you about your statements of taking in refugees.

I just find it a little hypocritical to expect the government to foot the bill for your moral crusade when you yourself won't be out of pocket really.
