Crane collapse in Mecca leaves scores dead, many more injured.

I wonder was the work meant to be finished in time for next months Haji, as there would have been a vast number more people present then.
The speed of construction might have been a factor, in a place where slave labour is cheap, and indeed life is very cheap.
Hopefully this happening at a holy site will be seen by some as a factor for change.

If posters could try to display at least some class in threads like this, that'd be great. Over 100 innocent people have died and hundreds more hurt.

+1

RIP to all that lost their lives :( was planning to go this year with my mum as she wants to go at least once. It's not an easy task, many people suffer with the heat and the strenuous activities that you must do in order to complete the Hajj.

Again RIP to the ones who lost their lives in tragic accident.

Couldn't agree more, after all, after 9/11 (and every tragedy that's befallen the west since) the Saudis went right out of their way to offer sympathy to the west. Oh, wait, no...

doubtful - the place is run by nutcase Muslims.... there have been hundreds of deaths during the hajj itself over the years and they do little in response - though one Saudi Minister did once point out after such a stampeed that people shouldn't worry - if you die during the hajj you are assured entry to heaven

The rate at which the Saudi's have been literally bulldozing their heritage is hard to believe. There would be uproar in the UK if anything equivalent were tried. This crane accident is merely a sypmtom of thier ultra puritanical religous outlook.

You get nut jobs in every religion so undoubtedly you'll have some muslim thinking it's a sign they've not murdered enough innocents somewhere in the world.

It's the same for every religion, some nut job will look at an event and put some weird logic as to why it happened. Islam's no different.

Exactly.

How? How do they know the difference?

They study the Qur'an and hadith and learn the difference. I'm sure an Islamic forum will happily have a 20 page discussion with you about it.

Agree even Prince Charles has intervened about them destroying Ottoman relics. Arabs are really thick, nothing has changed.

I wonder if the same responses would have occurred if this incident had occurred at St. Peters Square...?

Half a page... half a page...

We might have spoken of Italian bureaucratic mess and the mafia's involvement in the building trades, and how plans had over run and how the facility was meant to open a year ago. Blah blah whatever.

Accident happens in a country which employ people like slaves, treat them like slaves, and don't care if they die. Of course we're going to talk about that.
London 2012, constructed with no one dying (possibly one heart attack) completed well, completed on time. No slaves used.

do they have regular health and safety lapses in Vatican city or palce a low value on human life?

sure they **** kids I guess but tis a bit different compared to the numpties running mecca

Just realised why I try to stay away from the reader's comments on the Daily Mail website. The level of intellect shown is disappointing to say the least.

We complain about too much H&S but it's better to be able to complain than be crushed.

Terrible thing, RIP to those lost, hope it teaches those in authority over there to consider risk and work toward a safer work ethic.

Couple of points.
Why are they undertaking construction work when the Hajj is imminent. Could they not wait till the Hajj was complete?

The Saudi government earn 8.5 billion usd from the Hajj pilgrimage. Where does that money go?

They should limit the Hajj to one pilgrimage. This should lower the number of people who attend and make it safer.
