**** Sony Xperia Z3 ****

I was just about to pick a Z3 up when I read online that it seems to have a design fault - something about the glass cracking even when left on its own with no stress applied.

Seems like up to 30% of Z3's are suffering from this if you look at a poll on FB of around 1369 responders.

Is this true? it's the first time I'm hearing about this with the Z3 and dont wanna buy it if it's even remotely true

I've had no problem with mine, have cracked my screen protector last week but the screen is fine.

Worth considering the fact that people with non cracked glass won't be looking around for polls about cracked glass, so the fact that non cracked glass still out numbers the complaints two to one suggests it's probably not a big issue really.

I've had every phone from the Z range (excluding compact) and have not experienced any self cracking at all.

Has anyone had any issues with the headphone jack on these? I've never had a problem with previous phones, but the jack on my z3c has already been replaced once and is now broken again. Any little wiggle to the phone or cable and the music pauses.

Tsk, I've just noticed that the screen is coming away from the top left of the phone. It looks like both of these are known issues with the Z3C. It's 11 months old from Vodafone, reckon I can get a replacement?

Talking of cracking, I did this to my z3 last night :(

It slipped out of my hand and landed face down on the drive from a height of about 6 inches. The screen is fine though, the glass and touch matrix are not. So I'm having to use a mouse and keyboard to use it until it's replacement arrives.

That's exactly what I've read online too. People dropping their phones a few inches from the ground and the glass shatters. One guy even said his phone slid off a stack of 4 magazines onto a laminate floor and the screen was shattered - he was in disbelief.

Apparently it's because the Z3 doesn't use Gorilla glass?

I drooped mine a few times in Canada on concrete, the tempered glass protector absorbed the impact and only that cracked, so I've ordered another.

Best way to go tbh.

I've broke 3 or 4 back/front tempered glass screen protectors but not the actual back of the phone or screen.

Once the cat knocked the phone off the breakfast bar in the kitchen ~3.5-4ft drop onto tiles
Once from shoulder/head height onto concrete and a couple of times from hand height.

just broke mine today . hairline crack :( gutted.

dropped onto paving , landed on its edge but the shock has broke it. just my luck that it never broke the back lol. annoyingly the crack can hardly be noticed but the very very top of screen is now not working which means i cant drag the notification bar down :(

has been the best phone ive ever owned too. almost perfect. looking at what else is available il probably even get another one...

Those with cracked screens do you pay for insurance? I stopped mine as it was like an extra tenna a month so I just take real care with mine.

I used to up until 4 years ago, I'm usually careful with my phones anyway. The Z3 is a slippy thing when it hasn't got a case on though, seems to be much more prone to slipping out of the hand.

nationwide flex plus account (if you are interested trust message me and you will get £100 for switching to one).

for £10 a month you get

phone insurance for up to 4 phones.
car breakdown for 2 people in any car in the whole of europe and the uk.
travel insurance for 2 people anywhere in the world including us and canada which is usually a premium.
extra 1 year warranty on all appliances so long as you keep receipt.

excess on the z3 was £25.

Great isn't it. I'm with Nationwide and plan to upgrade to this account once I get a new phone. I've looked at similar accounts from other banks and a lot have rubbish basic breakdown cover or Europe only travel insurance, but as a package I think this is cracking value. Wasn't sure what the excess was, but that's really good.

Discovered a bug in the Z3, which is positive for me and hope they don't fix.

I recently noticed my home screen and app screen were also rotating to landscape mode, I thought this was from an update or something and was very happy with it:

Today I restarted my phone and it didn't do it, so I googled.
Sony says this :
The homescreen (launcher) and lock screen in Z3 will only rotate when the phone is docked (charger connected to the magnetic connector) and you hold the phone horizontally. If you charge it over USB or no charger is connected they will not rotate.
- Official Sony Xperia Support Staff

So I tried it, and hooked the phone up to my magnetic charger ( not original sony dock, I bought an el cheapo micro usb>sony magnetic connector from aliexpress for like 1 or 2 euros which I've been using to charge my phone recently, and bam it rotated.

It doesn't stop rotating, which from the Sony response sounds like a bug, imho it's awesome, saves a lot of annoyance in the car. I want everything to rotate to landscape mode.

How come does the phone not do it always ( or why is it not a setting in the stock experia SW?) ? What possible reason could Sony have to not make this a normal feature ( in the options or so?) and only have it when the phone is in the dock :( ?

I hope this bug DOESN'T get fixed, I want my home screen and app launcher to switch to landscape mode when rotated, even when not on the charger, like it does now after a quick connect to the magnetic connector until a phone restart.

You could just install a launcher like Apex or Nova that can do proper landscape support if you particularly want it, then you don't have to worry about making sure you've used the mag charger

That's exactly my point, why do I have to use 3rd party apps, why is this not a standard feature of the Experia software ( or well it is now, if I don't turn off my phone, which I never do really) ?

It's a shame, I've grown to like the phone ultimately, I love how it feels in the hand and how it looks compared to the more plasticy Samsungs, it looks smarter than others like Sams, LG, HTC or Moto imho, and the hardware specs ( cpu, ram battery) are great. I can never close apps and it will never lag ( launcher locking up which I named a few weeks ago was a software issue after using my smartwatch's ''find phone'' function)

But it has many flaws ( like the 3.5mm jack volume or the usb charging flap not sealing/waterproofing any more, and Sony want me to send the phone to fix it ( come on, it's just a bloody flap/cover, why can't those apes replace it in the shop but send it off for weeks, grrr), and return it clean after 2 weeks, to hell with that, I spent over 4 hrs setting everything up like I want and I cba to be stuck with some loan phone ( got insurance) for two weeks, I just ordered new (genuine) flaps off the internet myself.), the the stock experia software is appalling, worse than touchwiz imho. I've already resorted to using a different dialer ( exDialer) and of course swiftkey, the stock keyboard is appalling.

//rant against Sony.

Customer friendlyness and Experia software is really rubbish, the phone itself is a far nicer product than most of the competition imho ( and I can say this despite loving the plastic Note 4 too, the Experia looks more classy)

It's not a standard feature on stock Android either though.

It makes sense, rotate when docked, don't rotate when not docked!

It doesn't make sense in this day and age, in some cars you keep your phone in this little place like my work car:

You open the flap marked in red and you can perfectly lay your phone there in landscape mode at a perfect angle for reading it from the drivers position ( or well, at least from mine) .
It should at least be a setting! Why would your phone need to be in a dock for landscape mode ? One of the positive features of this phone is you can easily spotify + bluetooth + screen on + gps ( radar traps app) for over 4 hrs on the battery and landscape mode makes much more sense in cars like this.

Same when on the toilet watching youtube vids or so, you sit in landscape mode, why would you want to turn the phone back every time if you go to the app or home screen ?

I just don't see why you would only want this in a magnetic dock!

Do Apex or Nova add any other interesting features and which would you recommend ( note I haven't looked em up yet) and are they paid for or free? And if free, do they contain unwanted ads or push messages like loads of free apps do :( ?

IF you are on Sony's Android 5.1.1 hold down like you do to get widgets you should get a option called home screen settings which allows you to rotate home screen regardless if you dock it or not.
