Winter Thread - 2015/16 Rain or Snow ?

It'll just be rain throughout, with the exception of early Feb where the roofs get a half-inch dusting which disappears on the following morning. Like the 2014/15 winter and the winter before that :p

The last time I've seen proper snow ('proper' as in at least 6 inches) is around 1995/6 time, so 20 years ago.

Did you somehow miss the 3 feet we got everywhere about 5 years ago. The whole country was snowed under. That was worse than 1996, and I remember as I was a teenager.

Yeah I remember the 2010/11 winter, and the snow stuck for a while around Nov/Dec time, but didn't get above 4" for me. Buses ran as normal and work never sent us home early.

Go back to 1995/6 and earlier, and school would send us home at least once a year!

I reckon sometimes it will be raining, sometimes not raining, sometimes cloudy, sometimes sunny, may be a bit of snow, may be not, often cold, sometimes not very, windy and not windy.

So you are absolutely and categorily ruling out any fog and hailstones then?

I came through this on my Triumph Tiger 110 every day going to work - no staying at home if there was 2mm of snow - load of wuzzies.

This is what I hope for this year.

Doubt we'll get it this year - we are supposedly heading into a quieter part of the solar cycle but it will be a decline over the next 4-5 years before we hit 2009/10 level and the next solar cycle is also supposedly quite a quiet one which significantly helps to make proper winters more likely but won't alone be the dominant weather driver for UK winters.

The world will come to an end this late september from a asteroid so its N/A.

IIRC there has to be a major 7+ scale earthquake that causes sizeable devastation first which would have to happen by like tomorrow to fit the timescale as part of that prophecy.

Technically, you don't get hail in winter. Hail forms in particular circumstances during storms in warmer weather. Winter gives you sleet; rain falling through a cold layer of air and freezing. :p

Rain, rain, rain and more rain. Same as usual. Apart from one brief spell one morning didn't see a flake of snow last winter.

3 feet? Where? Do you mean the 3 inches that actually fell? Most I've ever seen was 6 inches and that when I was kid.

I predict dryish week days and rainy weekends.

Heh, completely the opposite in this part of the world.

Duty forecasters: Simon Keeling & Captain Bob

*November*
Current indications are that November is likely to be a very unsettled month.
It is hard to pin down detail for the month but our suspicion is that there will be frequent spells of rain, together with strong to gale force winds.
Rainfall totals significantly above the average for the month are likely.
Overall it is expected to be milder than average, although there could be some brief spells of cold, showery weather, more notably from mid month. A risk of some wintry weather, although short-lived, later.

*December*
Conditions are expected to be remaining stormy for the beginning of December. Strong winds and frequent gales are likely, and rain may be heavy. Once again there could be short lived spells of colder weather which could bring snow the hills of the north.
From mid-month conditions may become less unsettled, and although not completely dry it should tend towards drier conditions. Possibly turning cooler too, although with temperatures not far below the seasonal average.
The Christmas period could be rather mixed, although we currently lean more towards dry and frosty rather than wet and windy.

CFS2 based long term models aren't looking very favourable for a snowy winter :( generally projecting mild temperatures sometimes rainy and occasionally stormy with a brief cold dip in the 2nd half of January (which isn't predicted to be very snowy) - fairly high confidence in the models as things stand but its early days yet.

CFS type models still projecting a milder winter but many others including the met's models swinging to favouring between average and colder than average temperatures and average to higher than average precipitation which could give a chance for snow.
