Road Cycling

Another saturday morning of nice dry weather and i'm still stuck off the bike with this chest infection. :( Driving me mental but i'm out of breath just getting round the house, let alone cycling.

On the more positive side, the garage is now very tidy, my bikes are very clean and my guitar playing has improved ten fold.

That sounds annoying tedmaul. Last time I forced myself out on a ride whilst ill I coughed so hard that I nearly came off  I hope you feel better soon.

I popped out for a very low intensity fasted ride this morning to see what it's like trying to stick in z1/z2. Answer: it's really boring :p It did help clear my hangover though.

Cheers man. Yeah, I know what you mean. I tried to commute a week ago Friday. Made it in OK as its mostly heading downhill or flat. But had to stop and get off the bike half way home as I felt so bad. Was thinking I was gonna have to call for a lift but a 15min sit down a clif bar and half my water bottle got me going again and dragged myself home and to bed. Not ridden since and the cough has just got worse and in my chest.

At least it happened at the end of the year I guess. Gutting to feel all my fitness ebbing away though. Had been feeling pretty strong.

In other news, I managed to get the regular clip on raceblades to fit my Giant Defy, so will see how they go. Gotta be better than cruds. The front took a fair amount of wrestling mind you. Ended up cutting a small section of the guard away and had to fairly bend the metal stays, but seems pretty stable now. Though I've not been able to ride it yet.

Someone around my way has gone to town with the flag segment button on Strava. It also seems to automatically hide around 1/3 of the segments that I ride these days. Not that it really matters, just seems odd.

Pretty sure my summer bike is only going to get the odd cameo appearance now until the spring. Roads are filthy and in the shade of the trees they just don't dry out :( Going to use this winter to get my head around what new bike to get for next years winter duties. Currently everything from an ultra cheap Claris equipped bike to single speed to hub geared is in the running :o Other option is a new summer bike and relegate the current one!

Aim for this morning after waking up far too early, was to try to catch my mates up giving them a 15 mile headstart, however got about 25 miles in and realised I wasn't going to get them, just as I got to the bottom of a longish climb, at the same time as 3 blokes who looked to be pushing quite hard. Had taken it moderately all the way round but thought I'd climb with these, one quickly blew off the back (like after 20 metres) the other 2 were pushing on so after a brief chat with the last guy, went to join the other two, this soon became one, sat on his wheel for a bit then just went past him, and he sat on me for the final part of the climb, always enjoyable to get that carrot out to wake you up!

Saw a friend who I hadn't seen for an absolute age, so just sat up right near the top and rode with her for 5 or so miles having a catch up. She was recovering from a 5 day stage race over in Ireland last week.

40 and a bit miles in the end, but once the cloud burnt off was an absolutely glorious day. Hope more of the same tomorrow for the club run.

Get a single speed. I'm stronger on the flat and on the shallower inclines since I started riding one.

Bad photo, but a pretty major upgrade on the Mrs' bike:

Sounds good as in Norfolk we only have flat and shallow inclines! Very rare that I have to drop into the small ring round here!

Should be nice and simple to maintain too when I ride through the farmers crud on the lanes! I'd quite like clearance for big tyres (minimum of 28mm) with proper guard mounts. This wouldn't be a problem if I went flat bar but limits me a fair bit with drop bar options and I don't really fancy building my own :(

I should hope not, I'm in the lakes and very rarely use my small ring! Only for the steepest (12%+) inclines. I always try and stay on the big ring.
