Hi, I'm a complete noob with all this but earlier this year i set up a pi nas device and liking the setup.

I am now looking for a proper nas device to keep all my photos and documents on. Initially I was looking at a buffalo but as per usual I've been roped in by reviews and now looking at a synology for the quality and ease of use, namely the ds215j.

Now I see that for just a few squid more I can get an HP proliant gen8 g1610t which may be more up to running plex however I'm a right noob with servers and probably have no time to look into how to actually set one HP.

Should I plum for the 215j or would the extra £30 or so for the gen8 be money well spent??

Anyone have any guides for setting up the server to run as a synology style setup with more punch than the ds215j??

I run the synology on a N54l and its MASSIVELY more powerful than my synology 212+

I would recommend it completely, it also give you the flexibility to add upto 12 drives later rather than being restricted. Transfer speeds are also full Gigabit (i get about 108-110MBps) Happy as a pig in with mine !

The Gen8 is a lot more flexible and powerful but takes a bit of time to setup, if you want plug n play then you can't beat a Synology. You can run the Synology software found on their NASs on the Gen8 by the way, check out the XPNology thread in the server section.

I'd pick Synology all day long. If you want more than 8tb of space, then buy a 4 bay Synology.

Buy WD Red drives. To use in it

I have the DS215J with WD REDS and its been nothing short of brilliant to use. As everyone has said, its very easy to setup and run.
No doubt the gen8 will give you more flexibility and potential in the long run, but do you need it and can you spend the time working on it? Only you can answer that question.
I just keep photos, music, docs and videos/films on mine and stream DLNA to my Sony TV. Basic interface, but it works.
If you need redundancy, as Bleed says, go 4 bay, otherwise 2 bay mirror and have a USB offline backup, which I do.

I've just recently picked up an DS212j off the members market. I need drives so haven't been able to test it but I was after a set up that was easy to set up in minutes which a NAS box is from what I've read. I may upgrade to a micro server down the line but for now a NAS box ticks all the boxes for the use it will get.

Turns out the microserver can be had for even less that the ds215j... Budget may win on this decision and steep learning curve can commence!!

Also looking to upgrade

Hi all,

Also looking to upgrade my NAS, currently got a 3TB WD My Cloud which has been really good but now running out of space. Was either looking to buy a 4 Bay DAS and use the USB 3 expansion socket on the WDMyCloud or upgrade to a 4 Bay NAS.

What are your thoughts?

The MicroServer looks like a good option especially for its current price!

Thanks

Mark
