Caffeine Detox (Cold Turkey)

Got caught on the work coffee rota when I started my current job, so was on 5 cups a day (previously just one for breakfast, maybe a couple at work). I didn't mind it during the week, but hated weekend when I found needing to top up during the day to be a real bind.

I cut down to four cups, then two cups, then down to my current one for breakfast - cutting down was entirely painless. Now, any extra I have at the weekend is a bonus rather than a necessity. Much better.

My mornings started with 3 shots of espresso , then another one mid-day and may be a tea to shake things up. First 2 weeks was a bit hard on the body.

In the end i realised i did not want to deny my self the things i enjoy , so i do enjoy it on the weekends and a cup of tea during the day. Good to cut down , but does not make sense to give up.

I gave up caffeine a while back. For about a week I felt really bad with headaches and my sleep being ruined. After a week I felt much better. Im much more alert at work during the whole day (instead of relying on caffeine) and my sleep has improved a lot. Im pretty sure it was due to giving up caffeine but im also open to the posibility thet it may just have been some kind of placebo affect.

I often go through phases of not drinking any coffee - but I only usually drink one cup (maybe 2 on some occasions) a day.

When I used to drink a lot more it was tough and had the same symptoms you're experiencing. However, it gets better and you feel so much better when you cut your caffeine down. :) That said, I don't cut it out completely as I enjoy it, but I just keep it low.

Good luck with it.

Down to 3-4 a month from 5-6 per day now... switched to decaff, water and other gear instead. Push through the withdrawl symptoms, they're worth the hassle.

First real coffee in months kept me awake for 4 hours longer than I needed to!

I've often tried this and don't get passed the first day.. so three days is pretty good. It's cuppa tea I struggle with and one i've had a cuppa then I might as well have a coffee. I try and drink plenty of water to compensate for the effects of dehydration caused by caffeine.

I was spending £20 a week in Costa, I cut down when the wife found out how much I spent, still have coffee but only occasionally now, feel better and I use caffeine for running and it has a better effect on performance now I'm not drinking it everyday

I buy £1 pret filter coffee, costs me £5 a week. Stopped fizzy drinks over 5 years ago, was drinking up to 2l of coke a day when i stopped. Only drink lager, water and fruit juice and coffee now. Stopped drinking milk about 10-15 years ago.

I should really give up. I drink about 10 cups of tea a day and sometimes even some energy drinks on top of that (sugar free mind!).

Giving it up should really help with my sleep which I've always had problems with. The only problem is what do I drink in its place? Just drinking water doesn't sound all that appealing to me to be honest.

I did it, but then missed coffee. I only have 2-3 cups a day now.

When i did it, i made the mistake of just cutting it out. I was so tired and had awful headaches. Quite incredible really.

I'm actually considering it. I've had 200-400mg caffeine most days for the past 6 or 7 years most likely - this is pre-workout drinks before the gym/running/football/etc. Not sure how that compares to cups of coffee or high sugar drinks as I don't drink hot drinks and only drink water (or the occasional squash). I fear it'll make me less focused during exercise so probably won't get around to trying it.

Definitely feel it when I've gone a day or two without it though!

Once you've cracked the addiction, there is nothing stopping you from having an occasional hit in times of need (e.g. those overnight IT projects). I steer away from caffeine most of the time, I only tend to have it when I need a boost.

Sugar addiction on the other hand... :o

I've gone cold turkey on caffeine a few times - always end up going crawling back after a couple of months.

That first couple of days is absolutely awful, I actually missed a day off work the last time I was just completely unable to function.

I don't have anywhere near as much now as I used to though, I think I went about 4 days without any last week and I didn't really notice any impact. Could probably ween myself off now if I wanted to, but don't really have the urge.

bloody heck, thats a lot of money a month on coffee alone. Well done for easing back.

Didn't realise passive coffee aroma inhalation was a health concern! :p

Can't beat the smell of freshly brewed coffee!

It's on the same level as freshly baked bread.

yes it is particles of undissolved coffee granules flying through the air can get into your lungs.

I actually love coffee smell but don't drink it
