The delivery system has a fixed life span of around 30 years. The first of the vanguard class subs were launched in the early 90s, so a replacements will be need early next decade. You can't build nuclear subs quickly so a decision is needed imminently.

I think the economic boom was mainly because we had just come out of a world war, everything was blown to **** and needed rebuilding :p

So it would be pretty hard 'not' to have an economic boom ;)

We already did that, the Vulcans successor was called the TSR-2 but it was scrapped by Labour to save money in 1965 (project cancelled and planes scrapped), they chose instead to buy US designed/built F-111 planes to replace the Vulcan, then cancelled that order a few years later to save money (and appease the unions who were upset about the money going to the USA after British workers were made redundant by the decision to cancel TSR-2).

From the guy who bleats on about straight talking... you offer those 187 countries a paid for, NATO, etc. permitted, nuclear weapons program and the larger number wouldn't be turning you down.

:confused: A large number of people don't turn down free things...I'm assuming you mean with 'paid for' that someone else has paid for it?

But pay for it yourself, then people measure up the cost/benefit ratio, that's just normal.
