Quick opinions on GTX 970 please

aw, don't cwy :-(
maybe the fact my thread was purely asking between the two specific cards would have been enough of a hint?

Why have a go at people trying to help you out? Btw if you must have the 970 be aware that with a 390 beating overclock it will likely draw similar power.

OP asks which 970 is better and usual suspect recommends AMD - lol

Evga over Asus purely on warranty

Absolutely this!

Took near 6 weeks for my RMA with Asus, so for that alone I am now weary of them. EVGA are on the ball and you can pretty much get a turnaround within a week.

i wasn't, i was having a go at someone who had a stop after chiming in with something unrelated to my thread. i appreciate allt he comments here, i can't be bothered w/ someone talking about something else that having a moan when i say that's not what i'm asking aboout.

as i said, i'm not overclocking.

You should really look at what you say. I was not having a moan but you seem to be uptight for some reason. Enjoy you card and stop with the nonsense.

There's no issue with recommending other stuff where reasonable. They're the same price, one had a free game and performed better and had more vram so it makes sense short of him having a biased preference. There's a lot of bitter people on this thread already but he pointed out it's only Nvidia he's after so others have stopped recommending AMD just as requested and that's all there is to it.

Either way 970 wasn't much of a difference as others pointed out and gregster helped point out there will be a game with 970 soon as well if he wants to wait.

Let's see.

GTX 970

3.5GB VRAM + 0.5GB
partial Async Compute
Possible drop off in performance as new architecture is release due to reduced developments in drivers

R9 390

8GB VRAM
Full Hardware Async Compute
No drop off in performance due to drivers based on GCN architecture

Since many also say the GTXC 970 can be overclocked, it's fair to say so can the 390 so the point is moot.

Sorry, but you don't seem to get the point. I know you're trying hard to make the 390 seem better than it really is but introducing arguments like "possible drop off in performance" and all the DX12 stuff is just plain silly. When DX12 becomes widely used, the 390 will be a thing of the past and so will the 970 so what's the point of bringing up such arguments?

And we've been trough those vram fairytales time and time again. Think logically, what's the use of having 8gb of vram if the card can't properly utilise 4gb without major fps drops? I know, xfire, but who'll bother when they can get a 980Ti for similar money without multi-gpu issues, especially when new cards arrive?

Sorry mate, but 3.5+0.5gb doesn't work like that and has been disproved countless times. If I can't get the card to stutter at 1440p in a game that seemingly requires 6gb for ultra textures then it's just a non-issue. If you somehow make it stutter, then you're guaranteed to already be at unplayable fps. Being similar in performance, the 390 will end up the same, regardless of vram.

Sorry for the lengthy response. I also think the 390 is a good card but seriously, let's be sensible.

I just moved from an amd 290x to a gtx 970 and the nvidia provides way more performance in several games like project cars was a huge difference.

The amd cards use more power and run hotter even without oc vs an Overclocked 1500/8300 gtx 970 which in my case has never reached more than 73 degrees.

I'm not a fanboy and will use any brand but this time nvidia cards take the win. And the drivers recently for amd have been terrible so I switched.

Being that the 390 is very similar to the older amd cards I just can't recommend them.
