The only possible way this is actually news is if the aircraft have had their payloads altered as the top brass believe it's a new and serious increase in the chance of a dogfight happening as opposed to "routine" bombing runs against a enemy with little to no air capability.

Those comments will be mostly Russian troll factory output. Most people I speak to are appalled that Russia has decided to support the Assad regime, who are up to their knees in the blood of their own people. They also don't believe Russia has the capability for precision strikes which is why we're already hearing about three hospitals that Russia has bombed.
Edit: question for the OP? Would you prefer it if our fighters didn't fire back when fired upon?

Yes can't help but think this sounds like US throwing its toys out the pram because Russia are actually doing what it should be doing. Now it will have to start another meaningless war to make money through its oversized military expenditure; of course UK will follow blindly.
We didn't follow blindly. We had some of the biggest protests the country had ever seen for not going to war in Iraq. We were simply ignored because our government doesn't give a **** what we think.
Not really because Russia aren't going to attack our planes, Russia have even asked for an alliance to destroy ISIS but the west won't have any of it because I get the feeling ISIS are just pawns we're using in yet another illegal regime change escapade. If we want to be the good guy and oust evil dictators then why not start closer to home with Bahrain/Saudi etc, then we won't look like such hypocrites when we only go after the evil dictators who won't dance to our tune.

Watched one the other day, they were fighting in a town. Couldn't have been more than 50 metres from each other. One of the enemy was peaking his head round the corner of a building to see if it was clear to make a break across the road and keeps getting opened up at. Next thing some mentalist runs out with an RPG, screams "ALLAH AKBAR!" and launches it at the wall just behind the the guy who's peaking out trying to run. Absolutely brutal. But very effective.
