2 people died on the M1 this morning after a vehicle drove the wrong way down the motorway.

My 35-40 minute commute took me 2 hours on the A38 this morning everywhere is chaos!

But how do you even manage to drive the wrong way down a motorway? surely you would realize before actually getting on the road. Suicide attempt? mental health issues? I don't see how else this could happen

Our sales manager and another bloke came that way and it was a nightmare apparently. Like you said how could that happen?

That said a friend of mine had an incident like that a few years ago. He is a lorry driver and was driving along a dual carriage way and there was a few cars in front and he was going to move out and overtake but for some reason didn't. And it was a good job as there was a Mercedes that was driving the wrong way.

I can only think that there are people that are old and get confused or Europeans that forget where they are.. Or as you say, someone with a deathwish.

I wondered how the hell this happened, then read one of the guys who died was 87.

Not wishing to be too presumptuous, but I'm guessing it was probably him going the wrong way (though I could be wrong ofc)

It's normally either old age or foreigners.

Or both :(

RIP to those who died, I am sure more details will come out in due course.

Took me 2hrs 15min to make my usual 45 minute commute today because of this incident.

It is easy to become wound up and frustrated, but I try and remember someone won't be going home today, someone with a family who will be mourning. So what is 2hrs 15 mins out of my life?

In this case the 87 year was driving the van and the other person dead was his passenger.

No news on the driver who was driving the car the wrong way yet

The accident involved a blue Mazda Premacy and a white Ford transit van and took place near to junction 24 in Leicestershire in the early hours of Monday.
The 87-year-old male driver of the van and a 27-year-old male passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Leicestershire Police said it had received reports of a car travelling the wrong way down the southbound carriageway of the M1 prior to the collision. The road has been closed.

BBC are reporting 87 year old car driver went the wrong way and hit a van. Tragic :(

I live ~10 miles from the M1 and it took me 15 minutes just to get out of my estate this morning. I just don't get how traffic gets so bad every time something happens on the motorway!

Hmmm other news site are reporting the 87 year old was driving the van, not the car which went the wrong way.

Maybe the bbc has jumped to conclusions?

I don't understand why/how? someone could do this.

If they knowingly did it, then shame on them. It might of been a act of suicide, but wanted to take others with them?

Either way, a tragic loss and RIP to those involved.

It is easy to get confused if you are foreign though, and uk drivers do it quite often on the continent as well.

The alternative over here is just old age and they probably shouldnt have been driving anyway.

Hell my grandfather was driving right up to the day before he went into hospital for cataracts!

I think there is just some confusion in the reporting atm, as I'm sure Planet Rock news just said the 87 y/o car driver and passenger in the van died.

You are probably right. Both the bbc and itv are saying the 87 year old was driving the car. :(

one way streets I can understand someone getting confused but a motorway? I just don't get it you would have to make a right funny maneover to go down a slip road going the wrong way

Yet another example of why we need to introduce mandatory driving re-tests with older age.
Why are you jumping to the conclusion that the old man was at fault? The news sites are reporting the old man was driving a van, but it was a car driving the wrong way. It may well not be his fault at all.

Either way, this is a tragic loss of life that could easily have been avoided. RIP to those involved.
