Totally agree.

It seems genuine enough. They interviewed the daughter (Kirsten?) and she seemed very relieved. If that is true then common sense has prevailed.
What's my sig got to do with anything about this unfortunate person.
As I said, the guy knew the law. And still decided to break the law in a country where he knew it could be devastating. So he deserves the punishment. So, no sympathy what's so ever.
He was stupid and deserves to be punished. I can not think how anyone can deserve 300 lashes for such a crime.
Agreed. Which is why, personally, I either wouldn't go to Saudi in the first place, or if I did I'd be extremely careful not to break such notorious laws.

The 'it's the law the land argument' is odd to me because it can be used to justify the enforcement of all crap laws everywhere, including this country. In this instance it's a totally crap law, so I do have sympathy for him. That is not to say that those hoping to break laws and get away with them should do so without considering the risks involved or exercising due discretion.
There’s a difference between having an unjust law/punishment forced upon you in your own country and voluntarily going to a country with laws/punishments you don’t agree with, and then deliberately and premeditatedly breaking those laws. In the latter situation I’m of the opinion you don’t get to complain. The 'it's the law the land argument' is odd to me because it can be used to justify the enforcement of all crap laws everywhere, including this country.
It's a crap law because alcohol shouldn't be illegal.
What makes it a crap law? It's quite an easy one to obey and it's not like they're the only country to ban the sale and consumption of alcohol. Perhaps prohibition in the 1930s might have been more successful if they'd enforced it with corporal punishments.
I agree that crap laws shouldn't be tolerated merely because it's the law of the land but this isn't a crap law, just one that we're not used to in our culture.
Ah the white man imposing his culture around the world![]()
nothing to do with being white, though yes some countries are more developed than others and not all cultures are equal

The problem is when you're in charge of an unruly mob like the House of Saud is in Saudi Arabia you need to rule with an iron fist - the alternative is getting something like Islamic State in charge.
