I find it hard to be anything but skeptical when people who measure light variance coming from a star, make such an enormous deduction as "thar be structures".

don't know why learned people say this ? It is pretty ignorant for us to think we are the only sentient advanced civilisation in the universe ? I would say that Aliens would be the first thing you would think of ??

The existance of a dyson sphere would be wonderful. Well assuming they are benevolent of course.... but its commonly assumed that a society advanced enough to construct one would most likely be non warlike, as most wars are about resources and being that advanced means you have access to nearly infinate energy anyway.

wouldn't a dyson sphere be a fully encased star?

I guess even if these objects were created by a non warlike civilisation they might well just see us as cattle

Probably because so far every single time people have thought 'it might be aliens', it hasn't been.

It's not ignorant to think that you ought to rule out every other, more common explanation, before resorting to the least likely.

Can you imagine if every time a scientist found something that they didn't understand, they immediately shouted 'It might be aliens!'. Because that's what you're proposing.

Because learned people aren't ignorant. Learned people who spend their lives studying space find that 100% of the time it's not aliens. It's never ****ing aliens. And learned people know that if there was an advanced civilisation that was within reach... and capable of putting **** into space to harvest their suns energy... it would have probably contacted us by now. If we can see them (and this stuff is what they're assuming it is [and you know what happens when you assume])... then they can sure as hell see us.

yes I see your point, bu tin the case where / if they are positively making an ID on an actual prefabricated structure then surely the conclusion would have to be that there is some intelligence behind this ?

Agreed that you can't say it's aliens at every anomaly, but if there is a definitive building / structure discovered then what else could it be in reality ? This of course assumes that they can postiviely say it really is somekind of non naturally occurring structure.
