I think it's reasonable to expect this wont be the same game, even if staying true to the original is their intention. Enjoying the original and this new 'Remake' for what they both are individually will probably garner far more enjoyment from both :)
 
I would absolutely not recommend anyone to wait for the remake to play it first - it really won't be the same experience. It will be impossible to recreate.

Something so emotive, yet goofy; it just isn't doable with modern graphics and animation. A lot of the character came from the blocky cartoonish animation, and the contrast between the frequently childish comedy/plot/Japanese weirdness and the more serious themes/downright emotionally flooring music. They may find a way of making it work in a similar way, but it can't be the same.
 
I thought it looks pretty fun, to be honest, rough edges aside :D

But I always was a fan of side-scrolling beat-em-ups. Streets of rage, final fight, golden axe, TMNT arcade etc.

Exactly, this is why I believe some things like this should stay in the past where they belong. It has its place in history and should not be changed in the slightest, it is an iconic game that should not be remade and should stay where it belongs as past great. Anything classic that gets remade just never has the same feel or appeal in my opinion.
 
Not sure I like the look of the combat, but I had resigned to the fact it would not be like the original.
 
I'm kinda glad for the voice actors, and sounds like the same actors from Advent children, well for Cloud and Barret anyway, I'm still kinda hoping they'll give you a choice for the combat between the FF12 style and the old turn based we all know and love, don't see it happening.

And progress looks good mind, considering they're already showing gameplay, voice acting and the graphics imo look really impressive at this stage.
