Which drives for a NAS?

I'm in the process of sorting a NAS out for my dad and am looking for a pair of either 1TB or 2TB drives to go in it.

Are there any particular drives I should avoid for this use?

Personally I've got WD Red's but am thinking these are probably overkill price-wise?

Is there any reason I shouldn't be looking at the blue or green drives, or any other make??

If you are going for a NAS, use WD Red drives as these are designed specifically for use in NAS's.

I would also go for larger drives than 1 or 2TB to provide plenty of storage for the long term.

Yes I had a review sample when they first came out. Performed well enough. However my preference are reds because I trust the WD brand more and having used their rma process its simple and hassle free by and large

the seagate nas drives are essentially their Enterprise drives, they are very good as are the red's

I know synology have been working closely with seagate to help develop an enterprise class drive for the domestic nas market at an acceptable price.

How noisy are the WD Red drives? I've just put together my first NAS using a spare Seagte 1tb drive I had lying around that makes more noise than any of the fans in the system even at idle. It makes a very audible "shhhhhh" noise on top of the normal HD noises when reading/writing.

As mentioned above I've got WD Red's in my Synology NAS (2 x 2TB) and I can honestly say I've never heard the drives (or fan for that matter) over the ambient noise in our living room!

Hey there, Goose.
The WD Red drives should be pretty quiet no matter if they're used with a NAS enclosures (which in most cases are build so they reduce vibration and noise) or self-built NAS systems with a PC case (of course, as long as they are mounted properly and all the screws have been tightened). I have 2 3TB WD Red drives behind my back, in a docking station and I can barely hear them.
In my opinion you should check the noisy drive for errors, just to be on the safe side, if it's really as noisy as you've described it.

Cheers!

I was never intending to keep the noisy drive, it was always going to be temporary whilst I got used to configuring a NAS. I ordered a 3tb Red drive yesterday :)

These are on parr with WD and are more common in servers. I have not yet as such seen any WD in enterprise servers
