At what point do you get your tyres changed?

Because tyres are about grip on the road not satisfying the law?

Are you saying that in a country with no legal minimum you'd continue to run them until the canvas appeared?

Glad thread popped up to gather views, my rears are on 3mm and the fronts are on 5mm, I really don't want to stick Dunlops on the back again, so looks like I'll be changing the lot!

They don't cost a large amount in the grand scheme of things. You are talking probably £300-£350 every two-three years on an average car with average use.

Exactly, I had a similar argument with myself with regards to Uniroyals RS3 v Conti CS5's, the Conti's are £180 more expensive but they will last me circa 3 years, £60 per year is peanuts. You'll spend more on a night out!

Worded badly on my behalf, £60 extra over the Uniroyals I meant. £180 extra, tyres to last three years with my miles.

Ah yes, still though, must be extraordinarily low mileage to last 3 years on a set. So low you'd be better with a push bike surely.

5,000 miles for commuting (all country lanes), and circa 3-4k of leisure. There'll be no push bikes

Car is on 18's (330Ci) and I bought it with used Dunlops 18 months ago, I figure a new set will be good for three years.

Might need to start drifting more to catch up with you?

27k out of a set of tyres on a 330? Seems to me like you would actually use 3 sets in that mileage.

Can I just add that one of the most satisfying feelings is using a large torque wrench to tighten bolts, such as when putting wheels back on. That "click" is just great for some reason

I think there is being a pedant and pointing out that 30,000 miles on a set of tyres on an E46 330i is simply ridiculous, it's way beyond pedantry

A set of tyres = 4 tyres, your rears will last half that if you are lucky.

It's equally daft suggesting I'll be changing them after 9 then, too? But you didn't pick up on that comment, picking and choosing the pedantry.

Since I bought the car and it had used tyres, and I've done 15,000 miles with over 3mm on the rears remaining. I actually think I'd get 27,000 out of the fronts.

Replace them when near or at the wear marker. Just replaced some cheap Cooper tyres that I was forced to buy 2years ago. They had a 5inch split on the inside facing wall. The guy said he had seen this with Cooper tyres before. Eagle F1s on now...

You sound surprised?

. It is light and has got 200bhp and 290nm of torque going through the fronts. It probably lights the fronts up as much as a e46 330i lights up the rears.

I am getting close to 10k miles on my new ST now and approaching 3mm on the fronts so will need changing in a month or two. Rears are still around 5mm though.
