SPECTRE Bond24 discussion [Please use spoiler tags when discussing the plot]

Ahh, not liking all the 'boring' remarks... one thing a Bond film should not be is boring!... I'm seeing it tomorrow, having just returned from holiday, and I'm trying to gauge the reaction without spoilers, which is tricky. I love Mendes style, so if its anything like Skyfall I should be happy... anyway, despite some of the reaction I'm still gagging to see it.

saw it last tuesday,

To be honest i was looking around the full cinema, 8.30pm viewing so fairly late expecting to see a load of peeps asleep mid way through, it just dragged

the first 30 mins say ok, the next hour maybe 1.5 was lame and the last 30 mins was very good.

It just felt so tame and not bond, more jason bourne, or something.

I thinking watching it again will help, but it was not what i was expecting given the great reviews by papers and alike.

I enjoyed it but...parts of the story were a bit off, and the narrative lacked in places. I must be honest, I still rate Goldeneye as the best *modern* Bond and thats saying something when you realise how old it is now...I echo the above statements that Waltz was under-utilised but I was thrilled to see his character back in the franchise, and hope we will see more.

Totally agree. Goldeneye is my favourite "modern" era Bond as well. It just does so many things right.

Craig's Bond films are too tame, serious plot wise. There needs to be more spectical. I mean Quantum of Solace was about corrupt water privatisation, Skyfall was about some weird personal Vendetta against Mi6 carried out by an effeminate blond guy and Spectre was about a naughty global surveillance network. I think the problem is, is that they are trying to be up to date and have plots revolving around current global problems. I would prefer a bit more imagination/fiction and some bigger "evil plans".

There needs to be a more immediate global threat and bigger set pieces (ie a tank going around St Petersburg).

The action sequences were well done in Spectre but they didnt feel "big" enough. All the locations apart from Mexico seemed deserted.

Exactly what I said yesterday after watching the film. The bond 'villains' have all been a major disappointment. Don't even get me started on QoS, a guy who wants to sell bottled water? Jesus.

The late Brosnan films went too far and it all got very silly, but there is a middle ground which would work. Just look at Nolans batman trilogy, it was perfectly believable within the construct of the film and thats why it worked so well. I was really hoping for more menace from Waltz, just a single sentence would have done it.

You get the feeling you could skip Craig's Bond films by just watching the news and imagining a short, miserable, sour faced polish builder looking bloke running about in a suit that is too small for him in the background.

I thought Goldeneye, Tomorrow never Dies and The World is Not Enough got it just about right (Goldeneye more so than the others). Die Another Day went a little too far the other way though...

True, perhaps I am being a little unfair to Brosnan. DAD has tainted the Brosnan (except Goldeneye) films for me a little as it was so ridiculous it was embarrassing.

Hah! I think Craig excels in the action scenes, but elsewhere he seems uncomfortable and it really comes across. He never makes it quite believable that he is Bond, to me at least.

Started really well, even managed to tolerate Sam Smith's song with those opening titles, got a bit slow in the middle and then picked up.

Did anyone else notice that it didn't say "James Bond will return" at the end? First time that's happened.

Pretty sure they used to do that on the previous films also. Maybe not the new DC ones but it's on the end of most Bond films.

+1 Just finished GoldenEye and it's superb! If only all Bond films were as good as this one. License to Kill was another outstanding production!

Spot on!

Just back from watching Spectre - I hadn't been paying much attention to reviews or any spoilers beforehand so could go in without expecting anything much.

The theme song was ok, not the best but not offensively bad as Another Way to Die or Die Another Day. The action was mostly good but it felt like there was just a little bit too much padding in the film, if it could have been maybe 15 minutes shorter then the tauter storyline might have helped. The baddies were a little bit insipid overall and it was slightly difficult to see what was motivating them to do whatever they were doing. It was quite good to see Moneypenny not pining after Bond and M did a decent enough job for the bits he was in.

I'll almost certainly buy it when it comes out and see if another watch helps, I'm happy that I've gone to see it and I'll re-watch it no problem but I don't think it was one of the better Bonds.

  • Why did C want the information sharing set-up? I really struggled to see what he got from it or why he'd linked up with Blofeld and why/how that hadn't been picked up in the vetting he presumably had to undergo to become head of an intelligence service.
  • Come to it what was Blofeld going to do with all the information and spying? It felt like they were trying to weave in a moral to the story about a surveillance state but without thinking about why it was being done.
  • How did the ring get from one Spectre agent to another? All the DNA was apparently on it but the linking agents were all killed by Bond so presumably the British secret service must have passed it on to the next bad guy in line as the closest non-relative.

Well I'm not sure where the 'boring' is coming from, and I'm at a loss to what folks want from Bond? [I'm not sure they know themselves]... I thought this one had it all really... It had humour (worryingly, almost Moore-like silliness in a couple of places) and some deadly seriousness, coupled with several amazing set pieces, a big bad-ass henchman, and a decent villain [though perhaps lacking true menace] two stunning Bond 'girls' and three stunning cars.... and a
fluffy white cat :D

For me this was a 'Bond' film through and through... okay, the story might not stand up to intense scrutiny, but I have no wish to pick it apart.

I'm already looking forward to seeing it again, and will get the BD on day one.

BTW... I tried to change/edit the tread title, as it seems silly to call it 'teaser trailer' now, but it won't change

Really liked it

opening section is great
song not so bad with the titles
car chase, train fight, plane bit, london stuff all awesome
only thing i didnt like was the really quite uneeded childhood link between oberhauser and bond - it would have worked fine without it, and just tries to add OMG Dramas when the stakes are high enough already with Spectre being behind the other films - but anyhow all good!

Craig for me is the most convincing military man of the lot. Proper physical presence and a bit of a brute, rather than just an English gent that looks like he's preparing for a fencing tournament, a la Brosnan and Moore.

The plot and direction isn't his fault. He proved that he's a great Bond in Casino Royale, but he can only have so much influence.
