If you went back in time......

Surely this is just the grandfather paradox just with births instead of death so depends on which time travel theory/method you apply.

How does your father exist the first time around for us to get to a timeline in which you can travel back in time to sire him?

I am suggesting that your father would be born to the same parents as recorded by history (i.e. true time travel rather than alternate reality). It would require that any historical knowledge of your grandfather be consistent with it being a time-travelled you (either by you living out the rest of your life in the past in that role, or by your gran having conceived by a secretive affair).

In this scenario there would be no additional person who in some timeline was your grandfather, only ever you.

Close enough

It doesn't make any sense.

But regardless, time travel is fantasy. It's not even science fiction. There will never be time travel in any real sense.

Bootstrap paradox(taken form the term to pull oneself up by their own bootstraps) ~ if you went back and became your own fathers father who would be the original patriarch who set off the cycle of debauchery and temporal incest in the 1st place.

Exactly my point, but you've not answered my question. If you are your own grandfather how were you born in the first place? The scenario has your Father being sired by you before you were born. Now we're talking about time travel so a linear timeline must have you existing before you can go back in time, and you cannot exist before you were born, in your own timeline at least.

It's not possible, even if we say that time travel is possible.

I was watching a Back To The Future rerun in Dundee recently and I thought to myself, 'He's going to bang his own mum'!

Luckily the cinema attendant spotted the locals and threw them out before it progressed any further.

In these instances the causality loop / predestination paradox is the result of what was a clean original timeline, which was then corrupted by a temporal event (someone travelling back in time), which then goes on to create the new alternate (and thus non-logical) timeline wherein such an event happens, and moving forward in that new timeline, you can only go back within that new (corrupted) time line, as that is the new (and only) timeline for anyone in it!

I suspect a glass of wine will help bend minds around the idea :)

If you went back in time, yes it could be but only if you tracked down your father as a child in the past..

I'd advise anyone moaning about poor families look back at their own history, if it turns out your family was once poor, I'd advise you go back and stop your parents having kids and you'd do everyone a favour by wiping your self out of existence and thus expelling your bile..

Such consideration...

You posted in the time between me looking up the movie name as I couldn't remember it and then clicking submit. Besides impossible to direct someone to the movie without mentioning the name heh.

If we are imagining a scenario where time travel is possible, then I cannot see a reason why you should be unable to travel back to an event that took place before your birth (unless that is a specific restriction of the time travel mechanic such as Quantum Leap rules).

Your personal timeline would be consistent, eg:
1990 -age 0- born
2015 - age 25 - discover time travel and go back to 1960
1960 - still age 25 - grab your granny

Asking who came first in this scenario (no pun intended), you or your grandfather, is like asking where the beginning of a circle is.

It's a continuous cycle yes however how did the cycle originally begin at some point someone other than yourself would've had to be your grandfather/father/creator.

Best explanaiton I can think of is a recent Dr who intro:
