Windows 10

When I first updated to 10576 half my UI elements went solid blue :( sorted after a couple of reboots though (might be down to my previous tinkering though to make window colours/controls better optimised).
 
On a machine upgraded from win 7 home to win 8.1 pro can I reinstall win7 and get the free upgrade. The key for 8.1 is refused as being only an add on.
I cant get it to upgrade within the windows as it raises errors, update service is non working etc

Sounds like you might be trying to use the W8 Media Center add on key. If you purchased the W8 upgrade from the Microsoft Store you should have received the key via an email. Also if that is the case might be worth logging in to the Microsoft Store site with whatever email address you used as you may find the key there if you purchased after Oct 2012, prior to the time they no longer show digital purchases in the user's log in area.

Hope they bring swipe support back to their browser for page forward and page back and remove the address bar in Edge when in tablet mode.
 
Rumours that MS have signed off on RTM build 10586 and possible 10th of November release. Although I expect that depends how us insiders get on, hopefully not crippling bugs, should be out by end of week.

Makes sense as that's the same date for Windows 10 on Xbox One.

Which build has the ability to install win10 from win7/8 product key, 565 or something? Any idea when that will be pushed out to the public?

Couple of questions please -

I am installing W10 on a laptop that use as a media centre on the same network as my W10 desktop

Can I put the laptop in tablet mode and it will boot straight to the Start screen like Windows 8 used to? This suits a Media Centre better, I cant see the option on my desktop where it used to be in 8.1 (Task bar properties)

Is there anyway to cold boot the laptop remotely?

Remotely switching on, this might be a pointer, I think it relates to something that is part of intel management engine.

Therefore it depends if your bios has IME support / firmware. If not an alternative might be Wake On LAN but that I think would require not fully shutting down the laptop but having it go in to sleep mode.

Ok thanks, so they've just moved it to another location.

Great I'll have a read into that, another option I read somewhere was that there are sometimes automated switch on time options in the bios, and then a Windows script and scheduled task to shut it down so you could have it come on and switch off at certain times. Not checked the BIOS yet though and doubtful it would have this feature but its worth checking as an option

I think I want to avoid sleep modes so WOL is out, I'll just end up having issues with the keyboard and mouse but haven't tested it so I'll look into it as a last resort
 
Is there a way to set a custom mouse pointer size, or at least add in a higher DPI mouse point graphic?

I have my secondary 1080p screens on DSR to 4k and 125% scaling and the mouse pointer is massive on these screens!!

I cant have it on anything under 4k though as the text gets super distorted
