Fined for taking kids on holiday..

So weird school's have got like this.

I can definitely see the appeal in taking a heavy handed approach to make kids go to school. Parents who didn't care about school when they went may let their kids run around and do what they want during school hours but you can bet that those parents start to care more when they receive a fine for not making their kids go to school.

When schools don't close because it's rained a bit, or teachers don't get in because they're "Snowed in" (because a couple of flakes fell).... then maybe I could support such fines.

or they have to organise training during term time instead of the rather ample holiday periods...

I can understand school's having a duty of care and all that, but surely in instances like this the parents prerogative should override them?

When did the law change? I remember going on holiday loads during school time when I was at school in the 90s.

It's nothing to do with the school. They report absences to the LA and it's the LA who decide to issue a fine or not.

Always say your kids were sick during the time off, never on Holiday! ( although it's a bit late now ). I'd have a word with the head if I was you

Staggered that people think it's ok to take kids out of school for a holiday... So a holiday is more important than your childs education? Gimme a break. Should be forced to pay for the days your child takes off school for a jolly or a holiday.

Some parents these days... terrible sense of entitlement.

Sorry what was that, I fell asleep :o

It's 3 days before the end of term, I'm sure their education is ruined now!

It's difficult when your kids then attend school immediately after and were asked what they were doing, unless you can convince your kids to lie to people you have trusted in loco parentis.

When we're talking primary school, there's no way a week of school gives as much as a decent family holiday. Once you get to secondary school, missing work can be a little more of a problem.

"these days" is a bit misguided, though. When I was in primary school, in the '80s/early '90s, my wealthier friends would take two and three week holidays every year.

Not trying to stop people from doing it, just don't think a holiday should come before school! Whether or not it's primary/secondary or for "just a few days".

Holiday is a luxury not a bloodin' right! School is mandatory, holidays are not.

That is also illegal.

No it's not illegal, it's just not classed as legal tender, so they can refuse it. Not the same thing.

I think you've been harshly treated Locky, if the HM said it was OK, then I don't see the problem. 97% attendance isn't perfect, but it's not bad TBH.

Especially on the last few days of term. Hopefully the HM will sort it.

If something is not legal, what is it?

Probably telling why most of this country thinks it's against their human rights if they get a fine for parking on someone's private property.

U wot? You're being ridiculous. Nice troll though :)

It was for a wedding which had been agreed upon with the headmaster. If the wedding wasn't apart of taking the time off then I would agree with your opinion.

I understand the point that taking kids out of term time should not be a de facto thing. But looking at the whole picture, attendance, performance and general situation of the holiday I think a black and white rule is unfair, untenable and all it will do is leave people to flaunt other rules. A bit of flexibility is called for.

I certainly had time off during term time, but my parents got the work in was missing and made sure I read, did the work I needed to do so I didn't completely miss out. And we're talking about what? A few days once in a blue moon. Hardly a big deal especially if your child is doing well and you are willing to continue the work out of school.

A bit of perspective here. The authoritarian black and white just is not the way to do things

What is even worse is the best way round it is by lying, so you are saying to your kids it is OK to lie. "Really sorry, but the chicken we had for dinner last night mustn't have been cooked right. We've been running to the toilet all night."
