Sanity check

I only rinse out the rads before use. Using hot tap water first then final rinse with distilled water. Just do it as many times untill its clear.

Are there any implications to be had by mounting that rad horizontally, across the bottom of my case? If it can be done, then that kills two birds with one stone for me: I can keep my intended push/pull and I don't have to wait for the bracket issue to be sorted, which I still haven't had a reply on much to my dismay.

A lot of people run their rads at the bottom with no issue so i guess it will be fine although never tried it myself. For screws just google rad case fan mounting screws and something will come up.

right that settles it then, I will have this done before fallout 4 launch, mark my words!

I'm gonna start uploading some pics soon, there's not much going on atm, just some prep and cleaning, and I've started putting the main cablemod cables in just so there was something to do.

Well I went the Imgur route instead, as there are other people I'll be sharing my adventure with.

*BE WARNED THERE ARE SWEARIES* Mods, please delete the link if I can't link out to swear words on text, I'll edit it later (the imgur) if this is the case.

And forgive my terrible picture-taking abilities; the lighting in our spare room is terrible and it's been cloudy and raining all day here so no decent sunlight either.

LoL That is awesome.

I like the nice easy, just look at the pics for a step by step but also funny witty comments to also add flair :)

Not too sure the cats goanna help but .. there you go :)

BTW, don't know if you noticed but on your mainboard Southbridge, that Shiny section actually comes off quite easily and leaves a very nice all blue heat sink, its all layered underneath for extra surface area for cooling (Well it is a heat sink) and the shiny cover actually blocks it all off. I also think it looks hundred times better with it off.
I know south bridges never get hot really but still ...

Anyway just FYI :)

I've had this board for nearly 4 years and never knew this! I'll pick it off and have a gander.

Just missed a Royal mail delivery this morning of the rest of the tubing I need, I didn't think it would come today so I didn't bother getting up early, so got my little red ticket of disappointment to trade in lol. Going to grab some more distilled water and some screws today, not much else. Maybe some more cable management.

On another note, the retailer I bought my windowed side panel off has cancelled the order, stating "incorrect credentials supplied", whatever that means. That peed me off a bit tbh. Useless gits.

Well I can't seem to find the pics I was on about, but I have updated the Imgur; please feel free:

As for the mess-ups I mentioned (I used the c-word for willy previously and it got starred out; it's not an expletive used in this context is it?):

What happened was, first, I broke the strap/bracket thing holding the pump/res combo; it was really to easy to break so beware if you're going with this kit: I took it off to re-position the res so you could see the "EK" logo-thing when looking down into the case via the window (which I don't have as I can't find it in stock anywhere, and the few places that do have it in stock cancel my order as they DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE IT). Annoying as hell as I have to wait for that money to go back into my account each time :(

I bent the strap bit, not very far or with much force at all and *snap* - gutted. Managed to superglue it back together - if you look closely in the pics you'll see the crack.

Also, the extra tubing I ordered was the wrong size. I discovered this maybe 2 hours after breaking the res clip, and raged like a hormonal teen. I'd had enough; I flung the tubing up above my head and slammed it into the ground as hard as I could - as I did this, it created a whip effect with the loose tubing which cracked quite hard (and loud) on my exposed back (I was just about to shower!) and boy did that hurt!

i managed to use the now non-essential tubing to create my filler tube friend thingy, So I won;t be retuning it as I cut it. I'm sure it'll come in handy for something.

Also, After the first test-mount of the rad and the res, I found that I did have enough space for push-pull - only to find after actually successfully mounting both (had trouble with the radiator, ugh!) that this wasn't the case - I hadn't fixed the rad in when I measured on the test fit, turns out I'm about 5mm short for fans on the inside. The additional fans will be coming this week; I might pop one in as I can fr it on the topmost mount, not sure how good (or not) that would look though.

All in all, I learned a few things during this experience; the most important one being that decisions made in haste will come back to bite you in the ass. But then I already knew that.

Also, don't watercool in the Define R4; just buy a new case, it will be much easier in the long run!

Thanks for listening to my rambles!

Awesome, looks good dude. I love that res. I'm going to get one myself.

I done the same amount of modding for my crappy Zalman R1 case to watercool it, it worked in the end, but it would have been easier to buy a new one!

Thanks a lot; the pump/res combo is fantastic, save for that one issue I had with the strap.

I must say I'm a little dissapointed with my temps; pump and fans at 50%, is very quiet but I'm getting higher temps than I would have thought,

It's PWM controlled, I'm controlling via cpu fan header. Works really well, at 100% you can really see the water flowing.

It's the temps that were concerning; 86c at 65% pump, 100% fans. I did have trouble mounting the block before, but I'm fairlyt confident I got it mounted properly in the end. The water is warm to the touch through the tubing and on the end tanks of the rad, so I'm wondering if my fans are up to teh task.

Temps are ok for general use, but worse than my Phankteks cooler, so I can manage for now, but was really hoping for better temps to push my clocks a bit further. I think I'll try re-mounting the block tomorrow, if no joy after that then fans it is.

otoh, I'm certain I got a good mount and really don't want to bother faffing it up, as there's a lot of cables in the way of the backplate and it would be a massive ballache to have to re-cable manage all that :/

Hmm.. That's not good.

Is there air in the system and did you flush everything before use? I've never been able to feel my coolant temp through tubing.

You shouldn't have to touch the backplate to take the block off? The backplate mounts to the board itself and then the block screws into that?

What fans are you using? Can you feel the airflow through the rad? :)

Yeah I flushed everything with tapwater, then distilled water. I'm using Mayhems X1 clear as my coolant.

I referred to the backplate as the first mount I did I had some trouble getting the backplate to sit right due to some unusually long pins on the solder points on the back of the board around the socket area.

Airflow out of the rad is not great tbh. even at 100%. I presume the CPU block mount is good as clearly the heat is being passed into the loop.

There is a fair bit of noise, almost sounds like dripping (but there is no actual dripping, its like water noise, mainly from the rad.) I presume there's still air to be had out in my rad, but this only happens when running my pump at high speeds.

My fans are enermax T.B silence 140mms 1300rpm; I think I'll just pick up some noctuas and try get the last of the air out. Any tips?

Ermm two things

1.Those fans arnt particulary good for radiators, although they should be adaquete for your you setup without getting awful temps, which leads me on to ..

2. You seem to have mounted the rad fans the wrong way around, from your pics it shows your fans in a pull config, which means your sucking warm air from inside the case through your radiator.Actually it appears all your fans are exhausts.

That's not how they are mounted, despite the images. I must have removed and remounted those fans a million times, but despite the pics, I assure you the fans are in push, intaking into the case through the rad. Well spotted though.

I know they aren't the best rad fans, but I thought they'd have been good enough for a cpu only loop.
