how quick does windows 8.1 eat up a hard drive?

i have a 1TB drive in my computer with around 600gb remaining and so i dont take notice of how much system updates take up..

but i am thinking an SSD for the missus laptop as a christmas present as she has a windows 8.1 laptop that is nearly 2yrs old and since she had a iphone and ipad air 2 she doesnt use it as often as she did unless needed, but she said if it was faster and the spacebar didnt stick(should be easy fix) she would use it more...

the basics of her system is a dual core celeron 1.8ghz or something, 4gb ram(i stick), 320gb hdd and for her birthday the other month i brought a 4gb stick to make 8gb as that will improve, but i think all family pictures she takes amongst music and other clutter is still making it slow..

so i thought a decent ssd and buy her an enclosure for her 320 and use it as external storage like i do would improve things, but im not quite sure if 120gb will do or need bigger for os and system stuff?

thanks for reply..

no i dont have a budget in mind, but it wont be a lot as got enough going on as it is so im pacing things, i just thought it be nice for her :).

i was probably thinking a samsung 850 evo as i am going to get the one you linked be it as a present from the folks or with money as it seems best for money, but obviously for the missus it would depend on price and whats about, i still reckon 120gb, but only the crappier brand ones be cheaper lol

It's only £12 difference between the 120GB and 256GB Samsung 850 evo. The 256GB would be the best value for money.

just another thought..

what about the sshd drives?

500gb is under £50 and a 1TB is the same price or couple quid less depending on brand as the 850 evo, they all a lot more storage than she probably needs, but maybe could be the better option.

The SSHD drives don't give such a large performance boost as a full SSD, as they only have 8Gbytes of SSD. If you need the extra space then go for it, but if you want zippy performance, SSD is the way to go.

thanks for that..

is the sshd noticeably faster than a orginal hdd? i noticed going from a 320gb hdd to a 500gb hdd there were for improvements, so surely an sshd would be better?

quantity would be good also

I have used SSHDs and find them no better than regular drives. I have a 4TB Seagate SSHD but was so unimpressed with it, I selected WD Red Pro 6TB drives when building my NAS, and then added actual SSDs as cache via storage tiers.

I wouldn't bother with an SSHD at all.

I have a 240GB mSATA SSD and a 2TB HDD in my laptop, it works well.

thanks for that, sadly my missus laptop only has one option for hdds.. the 1TB in my computer is a normal hdd and find it faster than any smaller drives ive had..

i just dont know, ssd be good, but 1 big hdd be good also, saves the external option, without a question if it took 2 drives then ssd and hdd no problem.

If you keep on top of temporary files you can easily fit windows on 30gb.

I would recommend 120 as a safe figure

unless someone says a 1tb hdd will be better for the sata 2 connection the laptop has then i will get an ssd and just so i dont end up wasting money on this whole thing, ill get a kingston 120gb unless the 128 isnt much different in price :D

I wouldn't waste your money on a 60GB SSD drive. A 120GB Samsung 850 EVO costs £53.99 and the 250GB costs £65.99.

That's a no-brainer to me!

ha thanks i did however say if i needed to go below 120 then 60 would be the minimum ;), but im not going to get either now, i know its not long since i made that response, but in that time ive had enough time to think and look up and what i reckon will actually be for the best is a 500gb hybrid , so im going to order one of those :)..

simple fact is i dont know how much she will actually use her laptop(just nice for her to have an upgraded laptop) so an ssd could be wasted(ssd more useful to me) and the extra space over her currently hdd will mean more stuff and no faffing with externals plus a little more speed than normal is still good thing.

so i thank you for all the replies.
