old people things.

The "Live" is broken.

The "Neutral" is still connected however.

If you are unlucky and the local ****** have had a go at your supply substation the "Neutral" can (worst case scenario) go right up to 440 volts!

Peoples houses have actually burned down as a consequence of this!

Yes but there is always going to be stuff switched on 24/7/365 like the fridge freezer, combi boiler, etc. So if my house is going to burn down from 440 volts, it is going to happen whether I leave the TV plugged in or not.

Needing subtitles on the TV

I watch everything with subtitles on, became a habit I picked up while working in a bar years ago - meant I could watch tv while pretending to listen to drunken conversations from punters!! Annoys the life out of the wife. Oh and I may be 40 but I don't consider myself old!

I did a really old mans trick at the weekend.
My hair was getting a bit long so I cut id down to a number 1 but I got so far and ran out of juice.
I was going out on Friday so I thought I'll do it the following day but completely forgot.
I went out on Saturday and a bloke I knew asked if I'd got alopecia :D
After 5 minutes the whole pub knew my mistake and I had a queue of people taking the pee.

With my late dad it was always about the car battery. You couldn't so much as look at a button without him shouting "don't do that - you'll drain the battery!!"

I had a lift off a bloke for years and he was obsessed with getting to work or getting home without putting his lights on because he didn't want to drain the battery.
It didn't matter how many times I told him how the alternator worked he'd still take the chance of driving with no lights.

We stayed with the in-laws at the weekend and discovered that they never have a drink with a meal because a doctor once told their parents that doing so dilutes the digestive juices and makes digesting food harder

Switching a light on/off will shorten the life of the lamp

This is true. Lifespan of lightbulb is more affected by switching it on and off than just leaving it on.

Same with fuel economy with a car engine. I think from memory you need to be stopped for longer than 15-20 seconds otherwise you use more fuel in starting it again than if you had left it on.

Vegetables MUST be boiled for as long as the roast is cooking. Just to ensure that all the flavour is gone and they're the correct shade of grey.

*shudder*

Hurrah ! I thought is was only my Mom - she boiled spuds and greens to death then threw away water from greens and made gravy with fresh water. :)

I am really old in my body but my head is young and I don't do any of things mentioned here that old people do. :D:D

Depends what kind of heater. Some heaters use more electricity warming up than they do left on. Other it makes no difference. Some heaters will lose heat as soon as it's turned of others will retain heat when it's switched off.

I have convection heater portable one and only turn it on when I get home then leave it on all night until I go to sleep when I turn it off.

I was brought up to excessively turn lights on and off as I leave a room and still do it even though I have led now which it probably makes no real cost diff to leave them on.

This I would like to see

I remember a programme in the 80s that said every time you start your engine it costs around £1 so I can't imagine what the cost is now.
Of course this takes in the wear & tear of other parts.
