Hi guys,

Im after some external lights for the front of the house, 3 in total.

I want them to come on when its dark, then go full power when movement is detected.

Anyone got any? Looking for ideas really.

Many thanks.

I bought one recently from the rainforest. Half lantern pir.

You want it on all the time when its dark or just when someone is near?

That sounds rather more specialist than any I can ever remember seeing in any of the DIY stores and online catalogues I've looked at, I'm guessing it would either have to be a double bulb or using a dimmable LED these days.

Really? They seem to be loads around where i live when i walk the dog.

Never mind, what about a standard lamp that just comes on in the dark?

Hi,

Many thanks, these seem just what i'm after. Not too expenive either. Do they take LED bulbs?

LED bulbs and dimmers will cause issues due to the little power the LED bulbs require. However, after trying a few, i found this Phillips one to work the best in mine: http://www.diy.com/departments/philips-edison-screw-cap-e27-6w-led-gls-light-bulb/1136952_BQ.prd

There's a slightly brighter one if required: http://www.diy.com/departments/philips-edison-screw-cap-e27-9w-led-gls-light-bulb/1136987_BQ.prd

It may take a little while to "tune" the dimmer to a point where it doesn't flicker when dimmed.

Note: I've linked the bulbs to B&Q for ease of ordering with the light, but these bulbs can be picked up a little cheaper elsewhere i'm sure.

I have an led bulb that has issues when used on a dimmer in my house but on my outside light with has a dusk and full power function it works a treat , the outside light is as old as the house which is 22 years old.

Thanks guys,

I think i'll go with the above and let you know how i get on once installed :)

EDIT - What do you mean by "tune the dimmer" ?

Basically there are 3 settings via little dials on the light for:

1. Dusk to Dawn sensitivity
2. Length of time it stays at full brightness when triggered before going back to dimmed
3. Dimmed level

It's the dimmed level that you have to play around with. Dimmed too much it will flicker, too little and there's not much difference from full brightness. Took me about 5 minutes to get right, I can take a picture of my settings to make it easier for you if you want, just let me know.

I'd never seen those sort of light fittings before when I've been looking (I seemed to spend an age about 12 months back looking for something similar for our garden).

I'm adding bookmarks now :)

Hi,

That would be great, many thanks!

I've placed an order for 3, just need to arrange for an electrician to come fit them now!

:)

I really wouldnt bother with solar lights.

I tried them out front, they lasted about 2hrs before dying. A candle was brighter to be fair!

Sorry for the late reply.

Basically got all three settings set to "10-11 o'clock"
