Currently running wo 670 2GBs. I'm getting poor performance in Skyrim and F4 at 1080p. Now, many say the 980Ti is massively overkill at that resolution, but I like lots of mods in these games. I had ~200 in Skyrim + an ENB. Also bear in mind that my monitor is 1080p, but I use nVidia DSR to render at 1440p in some games like ME3.

I'm just concerned that if I get a 970, it's not going to be a worthwile upgrade over what I have. A 980 isn't much cheaper than a 980Ti so might as well cough up the extra...

Many here might say there is no such thing as overkill. Who doesn't like massive FPS during games. A 980Ti at 1080p will last you many many years.

No such thing as overkill.

As games progress and get more resource hungry things will begin to bog down. Better to overbuy than underbuy and then spend the money again anyway.

1080pwith all the candy switched on compared to 1440p with a bit less candy is probably similar in performance anyway.

If you can afford the 980Ti just buy it. You've already said you are struggling to play the games you want to on your current setup, dont struggle enjoy your games ;) :D

totally agree, I tend to buy the Best of a Gen at the point i buy (Without going crazy) so i went for a 980 (ti not about when i got mine) then i either keep it for years or sell it while its still worth a good amount. If i were in need of a card today i would buy a 980ti even for 1080p as games are using a lot more Vram recently. Take the new COD (ok bit of a poor example) But that uses 3.89gb of Vram whilst gaming on my machine @1080p. I would definitely go for the ti over the 980.

980ti is a great card which will last you a good while.
I moved from 2x 970's to a single 980ti & don't regret it at all.

I do run 1440p however.

Overkill whats that mean????

Unless the fos reading is going off the screen with 9's its never enough!!!!

It just being prepared.

A 970 is fine for 1080p, especially for Skyrim as it needs to be restricted to 60fps regardless of mods. Also, standing looking up Whiterun or Markarth will see frames of around 50fps with a 980Ti running at 40% or whatever... the game is bugged.

My advice would be to buy a 980Ti if you can afford it. They are awesome cards, and not only will you have room to manoeuvre with more demanding games in future, you'll also be well placed to up your resolution to 1440p without any trouble.

If a 970 is more aligned to your budget, it won't struggle at 1080p. You'll be getting a good boost with the extra 2GB of Vram and you'll be kissing goodbye to SLI issues and if memory serves me right when I moved from 670 SLI to a single 970 the grunt was a bit better and overall things were much smoother.

no point in 980ti tbh (not saying it's bad but it's a lot of money when better is around the corner), you may as well get a 970 / 390 at that res and then get the next set of cards when they come out. They'll last you longer and give you a chance to see if you're happy with the 970 / 390 performance. As others say, there isn't really an overkill because it'll just ensure it lasts a bit longer but 390's are going to be £205 on black friday. Can't foresee even a 980ti being worth the extra £300 over that. May as well save the extra and sell the 390 when the next set of cards come out.

Buy low sell for whatever you can get but clearly gibbo has already hinted that the 980ti won't come down much, it's only higher end 980ti that are getting the deals (so will remain around 500 anyway). Your choice but the ti will lose more value than the 390 will and when you move to next series of cards then the ti will be left in the dust anyway and you'll have lost as little as possible by getting the cards on a black friday deal.

I went from a 1080p card to a 980ti at that res and quickly realised I wasn't getting my money's worth so upgraded to a 1440p monitor.

I use dsr to downscale from 4k, turning off AA and it looks brilliant, great performance in most games at stock clock/memory.

My advice would be to get a decent, low latency monitor and buy a card that will perform well with that - adaptive sync (freesync/gsync) makes such a difference these days it's well worth looking into those.

Just upgraded from SLi 4GB 670 to 980Ti well worth the money, if its overkill.

Can l have a another Sir, another boy, yes please Sir.:D

I ran sli 780 at 1920x1200 before switching to a 980ti. Didn't think either were overkill for that res. But moved over to a 2560x1440 monitor now.
