I'm interested in buying a write off bike, to keep spare parts for my bike.
The bike has less than 500miles and had a front collision...
The damage is basically forks, mud guard, front panels, headlight, front wheel and maybe chassis.
Engine, tyres, electrics and most all other parts are intact.

He is a private seller, doesn't don't know if it is classed in any category, his insurance gave the bike back to him with both keys, he is the registered keeper of the bike and the claim is sorted with the insurance. (that is what he said)

What kind of documents should I ask him to make sure the bike can be sold to me? I'm asking because I don't know how it work write offs and insurance claims.

does he have the v5? you have to re apply for it when its written off as dvla withhold it

you'll need the current v5 and could do a hpi check to make sure no finance is owing, but if its just for spare parts there's not much to worry about

Yeah, he does have the V5.
I'm asking, just in case I need to transplant the engine to another bike, so I want everything to be legal.

One more question,
Probably I will remove the engine and throw away the chassis/frame because it is damaged.
How can I keep the engine legal to use in another bike and how can I get rid of the chassis/frame?

I tried to find this information on DVLA website but I couldn't

Code:
[SIZE="1"]Certificate of Destruction
The ATF will give you a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) within 7 days if they agree to scrap your:
car
light van
3-wheeled motor vehicle (but not a motor tricycle)
If you want to scrap any other type of vehicle you can still take it to an ATF, but you won’t get a CoD.
A CoD is proof that you’ve handed over the vehicle for scrap.[/SIZE]

This doesn't mention motorcycles :(

I'd say they come under that bit in bold. Strip it take the remaining bits to a scrappy job done.

The registration and V5 is attached to the frame so you can do what you like with the engine.

What's up with the frame? If its undamaged you can sell it with the v5,not sure with engines whether you have to declare it to dvla and they amend the v5?

You can also scrap the frame and keep the engine

Dunno if its the same with bikes, I'm guessing it is, but I wrote off my car last month and didn't have to do anything with the V5. Insurance write offs are registered on a different database so no action necessary with the V5 unless the insurers are retaining the vehicle.

(The above is what the claims team told me)

Yeah, I saw that, but you won't get a CoD and looks like you need one.

The frame is bent.

you don't need one i don't think, you just fill in the v5 stating that you've scrapped the bike/frame and that's it,upto you where you take it after (scrapyard ect)

that's how i understand it anyway

right, so I think I will make an offer then.
Cheers

Depending on the model of bike it might well work out cheaper to motoliner the frame as opposed to replace it with one from a breakers.

I want it for parts only as I have the same bike.
