msigtx980 4g to msi gtx980ti 6g is it worth it?

Answer: depends on OP standards

If current set up is not enough, then i am doubtful a ti will be but then again, its the only direction if you aren't satisfied. If OP thinks it is worth the spend to get the boost benchmarks show, then go for it. If not, then wait till a new gen of GPUs.

Firstly. Shadow of Mordor is shallow and boring as hell so if investing money to run that game seems a good idea then you have different priorities to me.

Regarding Gta V I run it at almost all max settings at 1440p. Maybe drop the odd one or two but I don't feel I need the extra tiny bit of draw distance enough to warrant spending £200.

Watchdogs again is a very average game and I played it two days ago, when I got driving into congested areas and crashing the framerate plummeted so I did drop a few settings to fix that. The game looked hardly any different.

I've been playing Farcry 4 maxed out and that's been brilliant at 1440p. Totally playable. Not one noticeable bit of slowdown for me.

The point is about return on investment. You aren't the average pc gamer. You are a benchmarking enthusiast Kaapstad.

This Op is about upgrading a 980 to a 980ti months from a new generation of cards. He's going from high end gfx card to top end graphics card... It's really not worth it.

Aren't total war games cpu dependant? Maybe that affects things Too.

All I am doing is pointing out the fact that the GTX 980 is not up to the job even at 1080p these days.

All you are doing is making excuses for the 980.

As to gaming I spend more time gaming than most people on these forums but I don't feel the need to write about it in the gaming section or this one.

I got into using fast PCs many years before I ever belonged to any online forum for one reason - Gaming.

Pascal is out very soon. 980Ti will be old news come spring.

You just agreed with someone saying that its unlikely the upgrade to 980ti is enough for him. You've also agreed that its pretty much just to boost benchmarks.

I'm pretty sure thats everything that I've already said myself.

So its like you've been agreeing with me all the time. :p

As for me "making excuses for the 980". It's a graphics card, its not an under achieving child.

I'm simply saying that the upgrade from a 980 to a 980ti is a massively expensive one and the OP isnt likely to see any significant change unless he watches his benchmark numbers.

Without offence. I honestly don't believe you do spend that much time gaming. Someone who is so active on a forum and likes to have his word read would surely post a little about his hobbies or activities. You basically just post about graphics cards, because thats your hobby. Gaming comes second to benchmarking with you. Its kinda clear.

Not at all

It is up to the OP if he feels he wants to justify the upgrade as it is his money.

The bottom line is the GTX 980 Ti is noticeably faster than the 980 @1080p.

I ran a 970 at 1080P and it performed very well and with a couple of demanding games released since, I expect a 980 to cope with those whereas the 970 might show signs of struggle.

I feel the 970 and 980 are fantastic 1080P cards for single card use.

I use a 970 with g-sync at 1440p. 90% of games run very well.

The 980Ti would be a waste for you at the moment. Keep the money, go to Paris this weekend and spend it at Epicure with a lady or a friend. Earn an experience rather than 5-15 fps in games that run almost perfectly on your current setup.

I honestly dont understand how I would notice any improvements in the games I currently play. Because they all run great and dont make me wish for more. And thats at 1440p where it should be at its worst.

You have unrealistic standards.

I'm either easily pleased, or I'm getting a high level of gaming performance out of my 980 + 4.5ghz 5820k setup.

At 4k it would struggle, but myself, and the OP for that matter arent gaming at 4k.

Sell 980 for £280 (price i bought mine), add £200.. and gain 20fps! if thats not a bargain, I dont know what is!

You will be selling that crappy, useless, overrated old TitanX then and picking up a cheap 980.:D

It is not my standards that are important here it is what the OP wants to do with his money.

It is up to the OP whether he thinks it is worth it, not you or me.

Yer, When I was using mine I was more than happy wiht performance in games at 1440P and only the occasional one needed turning down.

Good points and the OP asked what people's thoughts were and I agree with this. I don't feel it would be wise to go for the 980Ti, especially as Pascal is looming in the Q1 of 2016 supposedly.

I did tons of testing on a 290X, a 970 and a Titan X and for 1080P, I wouldn't have had a clue what was what in the time of gaming, as they all played smooth and trouble free. Up the scale to 1440P and the 290X and 970 were still good but the occasional game needed settings turned down but the Titan X coped nicely.

So for 1080P, a 970 or 980 or 290/390/X is an ideal card and from my own in-depth testing, it would feel like a waste if I was to buy a 980Ti for 1080P personally but like you say, it is down to the OP what he does with his money and we can only give advice on what we know and have done ourselves.

As someone who owns a 980ti and used it at 1920x1200 for a while, at that res for what i play. It was indeed overkill. But maybe not so for other games. Im now on a higher res, but if the op is happy enough to turn down a few settings the 980 will be fine for a while yet.

Yer, there is a couple of games out now that would push the 980/70 even at 1080P/1200P and one off the top of my head is Assassin's Creed Syndicate... Mind you, that pushes my Titan X at 1080P as well :D
