What track day car?

I love the MX-5 but can't help but feel that the lack of power would be a big annoyance, especially due to the great handling.

Nail that corner perfectly then it'll just trundle along... surely that would get boring after a while. On the roads I find it great because you can hammer it and still be within the legal limits so the sensation is great but on track, I'm not so sure. I have never driven one on track, though.

If you nail the corner perfectly then you'll not just be trundling along ;) I find it more boring going fast in between the corners, and having to brake heavily to scrub off all of that speed and trundle round the corner.

Obviously depending on what tracks you are visiting has a big say on how well suited your car will be. A big sweeping fast track isnt going to suit a great handling low powered car as you're going to be on full throttle 95% of the way around, where as a more technical twisty track isnt going to allow a big power car to show its full potential.

Clio 172/182 always seems a good choice, every track day i've been on i've always been passed like i was standing still by someone in one of those things... Driven properly they are properly quick for what you pay and they look huge fun.

Personally i'd probably be looking at an MX5 or E36 or maybe even an MR2 as i really like RWD

For MX5's being under powered i agree it all depends on the track, if it was empty the lack of power is no issue at all but it could become a bit tiresome always been caught by people with cars that are faster in a straight line.

Mk2 mr2 is a good shout if you want rwd. Gen 7 Celica as well but T-sport or 190 version. A softer cheaper version of the Integra R. Lots of cheap parts bin upgrades for these as well.

A decent 182 would be my pick or a 172.

suspension is cheap to replace, tyres very cheap on 15" wheels, not very tunable as they are NA but more than capable when stripped

I've seen an RX8 on a couple of track days (the same car) and the most it ever managed was about 3 laps before blowing its engine. It then got an SR20 swapped in which blew itself up fairly quickly too.

R53 Cooper S - some budget left over to fit a JCW intercooler, smaller Supercharger pulley, and some suspension and brake upgrades.

All the e36 suggestions and not one e46? Have I missed something? :p

Edit: Half tempted to keep my 325ci (e46) for the track when I get a new daily in Jan or so, but defeats the point of having the Noble if I do that :D
