Half Life 2 Episode...4?

Gabe whilst not 100% ruling out another Half Life game has made his feelings clear on the subject. Half is an character/story driven FPS game and those sorts of games aren't really fashionable as most people these days play Planetside 2, Call of Duty and Battlefield 4 i.e multiplayer death match. Ultimately I guess he feels the return on investment just isn't worth it for Valve to make another Half Life game.

It cuts me deep to think there would never be another, perhaps when Steam took off he just got too involved in that and it fell by the wayside?

It does take the **** a bit considering how they virtually ignore questions about it and give half assed answers. We've been left on a cliffhanger since 2007 and 8 years later still bugger all about a new instalment :( I'd imagine that these steambox things could give way to a new instalment of the game, maybe they want to see how they're received before starting on a new game, or possibly its already in development for all we know.

I really don't understand though. This isn't just a run-of-the-mill FPS that no one has heard of it. It is one of, if not the best and most awarded game franchises of all time and a new release would be absolutely massive. Perhaps even dwarfing the previous titles by a long shot.

Well the valve "culture" seems to be they only do something if the majority want to do it, seems an incredibly weird way to run a game studio. Seemingly a lot of them can't be arsed doing it.

Well we're not far off VR becoming more mainstream in video gaming not to mention while technically speaking we have a new Source engine, it hasn't been implemented in any kind of spectacular fashion. I'm just not sure if they are waiting for some new technology in order to unveil the game. When HL2 came out it was revolutionary not just in graphics and engine but also its use of physics along with AI. They may be making money hand over fist with Steam and not entirely the same company that they were when they started but I still refuse to believe it's a company that doesn't care to a point where they would just abandon the project. That I'm sure they can more than afford to make it twice and still have enough money to swim in.

Giving up on single player games also doesn't explain why they bothered making Portal 2 which was released in 2011. If I'm still allowed a crackpot theory this year, I'm going to say that since there already is a running joke that they can't count to three, they will simply break the internet one day by releasing Black Box containing HL3, Portal 3, TF3, Left for Dead 3, new Day of Defeat and Counter Strike without a single preview. Half the world then attempts to download it overloading the servers to a point of singularity which creates a resonance cascade opening up a portal between us and the Combine. At which point we now must live through a hyper realistic version of the earlier games in a our numerically allocated cities under the occupation of an unknown alien race.

Yes, I'm off to sleep now.

They really don't need to reinvent the wheel with a future Half-Life episode, they just need solid game mechanics, which Half-Life 2 already has but I'd expect them to use the source 2 engine which would give the updated graphics features to match newer games.

Also, I'm not sure why they think story driven fps's wouldn't sell well, because in the last few years we've had Bioshock 3, Alien Isolation, SOMA, Wolfenstien: The New Order which are all story driven fps's that have been well received.

It could always be, down to the fact that maintaining things like TF2, CS:GO and DOTA2 require considerably less resources than trying to develop a new game yet it still makes them money. It is depressing seeing these pictures though, as clearly the world was being fleshed out for a new episode, but maybe the story just wasn't quite up to scratch/what gabe wanted.

The hype and wait has gone on too long. I'll get HL3 if it ever shows its face, but many have given up I reckon. It'd have to be a brand new engine, not a rehash of an older Source engine for it to succeed IMO.

I'm past the point of caring now tbh. They've left it so long that it would unlikely live up to the hype if it ever was announced.

I replayed HL2 recently, gave it a 5/10. It's so overrated that i'm not really fussed about the existence of HL3.

I wasn't overly impressed. Played it on the 360, though. And never finished it.

And I made the same mistake as that chap on here with missing the boat thing :D . Though I backtracked a little earlier.

I agree with the above comment, it left on a cliff hanger. I would love to see Ep4 and HL3 but if they're not going to give you an end game, they need to keep the games rolling.
