Mondeo - What should I look out for?

Injectors do seem to be a issue reading online. DMF is with all diesels? Or is this engine particularly prone to it failing? If you remember what it is, let me know!

Thanks for the advice :)

Injectors are not an issue on this engine - at least no more than other modern diesels. The PSA DW engine in these is a very good unit and nothing like the Ford units in the mk3 Mondeo. Just remember the cambelt every 125k. DMF can be a problem, like most other diesels.

I've got the 140ps and 163ps in my scudo minibuses, all do 100k per year and the only engine related faults I've had are.....
Burst coolant hoses (metal pipe at back of engine to thermostat housing) caused by egr cooler leaking into the system (3 different vehicles).
Two cracked inlet manifolds on the 140ps (plastic, whereas the 163 is metal) not sure which the mondeo variant has, those were a pita to do as the rocker cover, cam chain and belt cover, and inlet manifold are one big lump.

Injectors are all fine, DMFs fail every 120-150kish(motorway miles) but i suspect the mondy is a different unit?

It sounds like the DMF going is inevitable. I will be doing all the Servicing myself so I will bear Cambelt in mind. Chances are if its due soon on the vehicle I buy, I'll do the full service and belt all in one go.

Thanks for this. Some great info. I'll have a look regarding this.manifold cracking as it sounds concerning. In interest, you mention a chain but Energy quotes a belt for the cam drive.

I was under the impression it was chain drive and not serviceable. Can either of you clarify or am I being really thick? Or is it both chain and belt?

I have done the Cambelt on a few cars including the Audi so I'm not new to them. But I am new to chain.

Many thanks as always.

Edit: Reading online, seems MK3 was chain but MK4 returned back to belt?

Edit 2: Also, is the 2.2 the same? Ford PSA Collabiration etc?

The engine itself is belt driven but only the exhaust pulley, there is a chain from exhaust to inlet pulleys.

The 2.0 is based on the Peugeot DW10, and the 2.2 is the DW12 (unless it's very new) (should add the cambelt went on my DW12 in the 807 not long ago after 90k miles of a 120k interval)

The one I looked at has already had it done. I think it would be something I'd do around the 75k mark instead of 120k - Seems too long for me and I come from a engineering background.

For sure. I changed mine as soon as I got it, at 80k.

its quite rare to hear somebody with ford 2.0 tdci without any problem at all. unless they lie.

my dad did, my uncle did. my friend did. people at my work did. they all paid at least £500 per repair

to be honest, £5k mondeo 2.0tdci will be high mileage and tired. i'd avoid them

as you do 30k a year. save up and get newer/lower mileage mondeo or get different car

I can only disagree. The mk4 with the PSA DW engine is tough as nails. As said, no notable engine issues, even the EGR and DPF work well. The only major issues I'm aware of on the mk4 as a whole are rear bushes, faulty steering racks, and some electrical gadget issues on the higher spec models. The DMFs are a common issue with modern cars and will break sooner or later depending on how they are driven.

I remapped mine and drove it hard from 80 to 130k miles with only one breakdown, the flywheel disintegrated after several hours of full throttle on the autobahn during a 1200 mile journey.

A good friend in Germany also has an early mk4, also remapped, gets driven hard and is on around 250.000km with only a flywheel and never any issues.

There's a taxi driver on here who is well over 200.000 miles with his, remapped and still on original mechanicals IIRC.

They are on the whole reliable cars (unlike the mk3 TDCi) and I did a lot of research on the issue before I bought it. If your uncle and friend had major problems with mk4 (apart from DMFs) I'd say they were unlucky.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the advice - I've read them all and took it all on-board.

I'm going to look at a 2009 2.2l Titanium X Sport with 103k on the clock. Full Service History and MOT'ed yesterday.

Will update on how it goes. It's listed for £5900 which seems to match the going rate for these. Though I'm sure there is room for a bit of bartering!

If you like, post the car here and we can take a look :)

FWIW, I sold my 2008 Titanium 2.0 TDCi Auto in July for 3k, on 130k miles. Not sure how relevant to the car you're looking at but just putting it out there. Not sure an '09 Titanium X is worth almost 6k but I could be wrong. I paid 6.8k for mine in 2012 from a main dealer at 80,000 miles and I don't think I got it exceptionally cheap.

There is no pictures unfortunately hence why I didn't think it was worth it.

But massively appreciate it all the same: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201512089310401

6k for a 6/7 year old Mondeo with 100K+ on it.

Hope there's allot of room for negotiation.

Well there was none! :D

I went to have a look at it full well knowing I wasn't paying £5.9k for it. Checked it over. Its the first time I've got hands on with that spec level so the visit was worth it. Engine seems fairly smooth compared to my Audi when cold and interior is nice. Didn't bother test driving it in the end.

However the rear bumper was out of alignment and it needs two new tyres (driver rear and passenger front). He didn't want to know me though. He didn't show the car off nor help in the slightest. And when I mentioned the problems he didn't seem bothered nor was interested in negotiating. Two more appointments tomorrow (yeah right).

Time to look again!

Loads of diesel Mk4's of that sort of miles so be patient, sounds like you went with the right attitude being prepared to walk away.

Jezus...I paid close to 6k for my 2.5T Mk4 with 17.5k miles on it. I love my Mk4, easy to drive, phower when you need it and comfortable :)

Thanks, I was a bit unsure whether I was being a bit too greedy so I'm glad to know im on the right track. I'm in no major rush to buy and I really don't want a lemon. What would you have paid for that car in interest?

That sounds awesome. What's the trim level on that?

That was sorta what I was hoping to hear. My mentality to get Xenons was that they are far superior then halogens. So knowing that drives me to find one with Xenons.

I stated earlier I really wanted Xenons. Just looking on Auto trader and the price gap between the X and X Sport, is it really that big a difference between Xenons and say Phillips X-treme? £3.5k can get a decent X whilst after speaking to a trader friend, £5500 is the apparent going rate for the car I linked above (listed at £5865).

Or are my prices wrong?

I understand Acme's experience was poor. Anyone else got any opinions on it?

There's no real comparison between proper factory Xenons and the higher output halogen bulbs like the Xtreme Vision and Osrams. In the past I went from a Fiesta to a Focus with xenons - absolutely amazing. I ended up selling the car and went back to another Fiesta with halogen bulbs - even after putting Xtreme Visions in it felt like I had no headlights on.

It's only Titanium but it does me just fine. Few mods planned but in no hurry. It's just done over 35k now
