hi

getting the bits for a new pc.
have a 1.2tb intel 750.

now, thinking on it, I put os (win10) on it as boot, install apps, games.
What next? let itunes etc put everything on it?
my movies etc? total I have it about 300gb.

I was thinking - grab a 400gb 750 on the cashback and install os on that?
or get few normal ssds (e.g. intel 535) and put movies on that?
seems a waste not to use the 750 as much as possible.
hmm.
mb is RvE, x99. cpu is 5930.

pc will be only pc - for general, music, development, games.
hmmmm.

or just use the 750 and get a nas?

I would suggest getting a mech drive or a NAS. I have 2x250Gb SSDs in my PC, one for my OS/apps and the other for games. My NAS has all my music, pictures, films and downloads and it's accessible through networked drives.

I can also stream the music and films to my console in my sitting room. I wouldn't have it any other way to be honest. I can also access the NAS from work and download anything I want using the web interface be it a torrent or directly to my laptop.

thanks folks. NAS is the way to go then :)

Whats the best NAS? Reading up, seems that Synology is top brand at the moment?
dont quite understand the difference between the 2**, 4**, 7** and the standard, + and play models.
Their website doesnt make it obvious! lol.

Budget?
How many bays?

bays - 2 I think. mirrored for backup.
liking the idea of the 5 year warranty of the 6TB WD Red Pro.
budget - up to about £800 for the device and drives. £700 is ideal.
If I use it for 5 years, I am thinking 800/5 = £160 a year for backup and availability is acceptable.

quite like the idea of cameras and making a diy cctv to go with it, think thats what synology do?

NAS is great for the right environment but generally, domestic use is not the right environment in my opinion, especially if you have 1 always on PC, that can perform the functions of a NAS and is a lot cheaper. A house full of laptops and tablets is great for a NAS.
