I remember playing I think the third episode and despite the great gameplay it lacked advances such as moving trees/grass, which some games of the time had (Stalker I believe was one). Was still great though but thought they could do with advancing the engine much further. It did however run great on the hardware of the time.
HL 3 would have to be a huge leap forward and as others have said, the expectations might be so high it will never happen because of it. Some things are better left in the past, better that than releasing an unimpressive HL3 that then destroys the reputation of the original HL series.
