In some games, MSI Afterburner overlay can negatively impact FPS by 9-16%

Is the overlay mode the problem though? If the overlay is in 2d it can impact (massively) but the two 3d modes (vector and something else) have zero impact on things i've tried.

I always thought it was the RTSS component of AB when used in conjunction with 64 bit games that caused performance issues.I know it did for me in Titanfall,FC4 and BF3/4,i never even used the overlay functionality either.

Edit: Removing RTSS fixed all the issues i had while playing these games and running AB in the background.

No solid facts to show, but I think Raptr reduces framerates, especially when using Plays.tv recording.

As does Windows 10's Xbox App, disbale Game DVR in settings.

Hmmm. This needs more solid investigation.

Even if it does lower fps a small bit (if this can be proven) I've used rivatuner/RTSS to limit fps and solve some stutter issues I've had with a few games using SLI and gsync. I'd take a 5-10% hit in overall 'top' framerate any day of the week if it means the overall performance is silky smooth and totally stutter free. To pluck arbitrary figures out of the air, I'd rather have 75fps stutter free than 85fps with microstutters.

I never understood the need for the overlay outside of troubleshooting and initial performance tweaking.

Once you have the came configured to your liking, do you ever look at the overlay again? I have Rainmeter with statistics on a secondary monitor and it's rare I will look at it.

Tested GTA V. Nothing more than margin of error.

I use it for the time.

I used it a lot when running sli 780's, (they could get quite hot). No real need for the on screen display now tbh as my current card is much cooler.

Use a....clock?

I could but I don't really have one handy - nor the space I want to put it.

I already have MSI afterburner running for stuff anyway and we have already established there is no performance impact for using the OSD so why not
