You took me way too literally. I was referring to what JJ did with Star Trek, nothing more or less. ep 7 has basically followed the same "script" its nuked off the whole of the republic same as they did in Star trek..

yes its 30 years later, but its reset the whole Star wars universe to be "whatever they want"

Its not bad its just change.. People dont like stuff they have grown up with for nealry 40 years to be changed.

How else are we meant to take it? You stated it's a retelling like Star Trek which it clearly isn't. It also hasn't "reset" the whole Star Wars universe to be whatever they want. They have disregarded the extended universe. The only other way to do it would be, A) Tell the same story as the extended universe B) Continue on from the EU in some way (no idea if this is feasible as I haven't read them) or C) exactly what they did.

Was it not always thought that the EU wasn't 100% canon anyway? Didn't Lucas state something like, the only stuff that he was beholden too was the 6 films he created and the clone wars? The extended universe is pretty much different writers making stories about what they think happened after ROTJ or whenever.

All Disney have done is state officially that they are no longer the stories that happened after ROTJ. Makes sense rather than tip toeing around what is basically fan fiction.

Yes.
Watched the first two trailers, and been burying my head in the sand ever since.
I went, I saw, and I enjoyed the movie (To the extend, I may see it again after xmas..)

It's not the movie, or story I would have told, given the cast and characters that returned (Luke, Leia and Han) or with the new characters introduced (Rey, Finn, Poe or Kylo Ren.) But it's a story I enjoyed.
I look forward to Episodes 8 & 9.

The one big gripe, I did have with the TFA.
Was that it took Episodes 4-6 and compressed some of the best and key events from them, and retold them through the new characters...
But one can argue that Star Wars, is great at reminding us about the fact; That if we don't know our history, we are doomed to repeat it.
After all, what was once old, can be made new again...

As for the movie TFA, I really enjoyed it.
The new Characters, Rey and Finn I loved. Especially the opening scene with the Millennium Falcon. :D
Kylo Ren was slightly harder to follow; Is he deadly serious or a comedy break?
I also guess, his path is set, after the controversial ending on-board the Death Star MK3.

The hardest pill for me to swallow with the TFA, is the fact that the Extended Universe characters, and events are no more... Loved those books and comics.

Not content with trashing 2 threads, he decides to create his own to preach in.

People who put this much effort into trying to slate something usually have a hidden passion for it. I can only assume that easyrider secretly loves this film but is refusing to admit it.

Yes

Loved it.

He is taking great lengths in what he is doing, makes me wonder the same?

Yes - Good solid blockbuster, not the best movie I've ever seen but it was incredibly entertaining and that's all anyone sensible could hope for.

It was a retelling in the same way he did to Kirk and Spock.
Familiar enough to a fan but some glaring changes/shortcuts that don't quite sit right.
Numerous plot holes that could have been patched up with 30 seconds of effort.
Too humorous? I laughed out loud at all the jokes, both times i've seen it, but they didn't feel "Star Warsy" just slapstick...

How can you judge "plot holes" in the first part of a trilogy??? THe plot isn't done yet so of course it has holes.

I thought the humour was bang on with the original trilogy. Lots of great lines and banter between characters and very little slapstick.

It amazes me how easily people are entertained.

I have to agree, even if it makes me an narcissistic ass. I think the vast majority of people can enjoy films with bad plots, horrific dialogue, and films that are disjointed/ incoherent. And really, genuinely think they're great.

Some of us are cursed in that bad dialogue grates in our ears; we like convincing characters with plausible actions and motives, and no amount of explosions will substitute for that.

I don't think anyone will take anything you say seriously anymore FoxEye after your recent posting antics. :p

Seen it tonight as I couldn't quite wait until the IMAX booking in early Jan. Now the films somehow never quite captured my imagination as a kid and I think I've had more memorable experiences with the Star Wars universe in gaming so I can hardly say I'm the biggest fan in the world. Apart from seeing the original trailer for this I've avoided any possible snippet of information or article about it to make sure I went in with a clean slate and an open mind.

I think as an entertaining blockbuster and a great homage that stays true to the original trilogy this film works well. There's great detail, once again rich world, plenty of Easter eggs and greats effects that are not overboard like the previous episodes. It was good fun and entertaining although not quite the classic level but should hopefully setup the other 2 episodes nicely.

If I was to treat it as a new franchise and a film in its own right then you could fault it for certain plot cop outs, rushed character development and slightly messy end. Could argue plot is too simplistic and very similar to the original film in 1977 but then I wouldn't be treating it as a film in its own right :p

At what point does a homage become a copy, tho? Death Star = Death Planet, taking down the shields, hitting the singular weak point for massive damage, flying X-wings in the trenches with gun emplacements...

Is that homage, or is that re-creating scenes from the original movies? And lifting large parts of the plot to re-use them? Is that homage?

Its all good. I think in 10 years when all the new trilogy is done and dusted 7 will be looked at as the worst of the 3 because they had to weave in and change so much of the previous trilogy to appeal to the previous generation like me.

I really hope they dont go down the route of taking the old films and just reworking them with quirky gender role swaps or "pseudo clever" changes to the original stories. (aka star trek reference - deathstar deathplanet BS zz z zz)

I think FoxEye says it well. It was so much lip service to the old films. Im very conflicted. Like i said somewhere else it is good film but well short of brilliant.

EDIT: TBH if they had kept the gun sounds of old storm troopers i probably wouldn't be posting anything, id be content. They kept many other of the iconic sounds. I think it was a strange oversight.

I had managed to stay away from any spoilers going in - im 43 - one of my earliest memories was off being taken to Star Wars at 5, Empire at 7 and Jedi when I was 10 - by the time Jedi was coming out i was more excited about it than anything ever, the anticipation in the movie coming out, the toys, everything.

Fast forward 32 years later and all the feelings came back, i know it was a complete rehash but it didnt detract one bit for me, ive not had an experience like it in the movies since i was a kid and thats what it did, it transported me back to being 10 again, the sights, the sounds, they absolutely nailed it - it was absolutely magical. I cant wait to see it again.

Yes and more IMO.

Though I purposefully did not read about it or look it up or even re-read parts of the expanded universe to prevent any expectations from not being realised.

I still just about remember seeing ROTJ at cinema, and remember being obsessed with the first 3 as a child.

I'm hoping to see it again ASAP.

Yes, but only because I didn't hype myself up for it.

Loved the original trilogy, and HATED the prequels, so I went in with no real expectations.

Was the film perfect? No. Is it up there with the all time great films? No. Did it tick all the boxes I wanted and make me feel like a little kid again? Yes.

I really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to seeing it again tonight.

Saw it Thursday night, and WILL see it again this week so its a very good film........but some things were still annoying

Basically VERY similar to ANH for right or wrong, wish it could have been a little more original.

Some of the music (about half way through) I got really annoyed about - either change it completely or keep it the same, just changing the odd bar here and there doesn't cut it with me.

Thought it could have been a little longer - really thought the "best X Wing pilot in the galaxy" should have had a much bigger part rather than just a minute or two here and there. Leia also has a very small part but I guess in some ways it works better.

Kylo was un-masked too early - should have left that on until meeting Han.

Love Rey and Finn though, think both these characters work very well on their own and together.
