I presume he's asking why the manual is 6sp while the auto is 5sp.

But the answer is surely 'because it just is'. Until many speed gearboxes it was common for autos to have less gears than a manual.

The E46 kept the same 5 speed box throughout its life, the E90 moved to a 6 speed.
