Can anyone that's owned a 2011 Volvo s40 tell me what this is on the dashboard ?I'm thinking of buying the car but the dealer says it isn't a sat nav so I'm trying to work out what it is

Then he doesn't have the navigation CD/DVD and/or remote control and is fobbing you off.
I promise you, it's the satnav.

^I couldn't see that on my phone but yes.

It is most definitely the RTI pop-up screen. RTI stands for Road and Traffic Information System and it's Volvo's satnav.

Buy a car somewhere else.

By buying another S40 from a reputable dealer.

Did you actually look at the navigation unit to close the shutter? The remote could well be in the glovebox.

Yeah the guy that said it wasn't a satnav was just the salesman the guy that deals with the cars knew right away it was a nav unit and when I had rung up this morning had already ordered a remote and new disk

They (Volvo) also often have a toggle style remote on the back of the steering wheel, near where your right hand would rest

What a great place - the car salesman doesn't know anything about cars!

What's the spec of the car anyway?

Not suggesting it should be a deal-breaker if everything else fits the bill and there are few local alternatives available, but that would worry me a bit in terms of whether it is the sort of firm I'd want to be doing business with. In other words, can you be sure any prep work has / will be done to a suitable standard, what happens if you have any problems are you going to have to be dealing with imbeciles, is everything they have told you about the car spec factually correct etc etc. When this fella told you it had a full size spare wheel, you thought he meant one under the boot, whereas he was thinking the one shown in the picture... :)

It's a garage family and friends have used for years without any problems so I'm putting it down to a one off, the spec and the price I'm getting the car for is what I'm looking for and more than happy wth especially since he's upgrading my warranty to 24 months, the cars a 90000mile 2011 Volvo S40 se lux with nav and full Volvo service history for £6800.

Just to update I ended up buying the car then taking it back a week later, they had lied about the service history of the car stating that it had full Volvo service history. when I picked the car up they said they didn't have the service book and would forward it on to me in a few days, when I got the book all the services except 3 had been done at Halfords and places like that, when I brought it up they said a Halfords service was as good as and classes as a dealer service, I went and checked that with mill Volvo (the main Volvo dealer)when I asked the guy I have never seen someone laugh so hard(I have been a motorbility customer since 2002 so services have always been done at main dealer). So off I trotted to the garage kicking off, he was adamant he was right and wouldn't refund the car until I told him I was going to the local press about his garage. in the end I got my money back and went to the main dealer and got a nice little 55000mile full dealer service history V40 SE Nav for £9500 with a years dealer warranty and free mot for life. Moral of the story trust nobody

Your own fault i'm afraid

They had clearly lied before you went near the car, and "book will be in the post" is the oldest trick in the book
