It's not necessarily a unskilled labour problem, tall buildings in Dubai only had to have cladding made of stuff that didn't burn from 2013 onwards.

sounds like its probably just the outside burning then and the inside will be protected by the sprinker system? (but going to be wrecked from smoke damge but not burnt)

Wonder why the media isn't mentioning Terrorists......

Probably because there's no evidence that it has anything to do with terrorism. If you're going to speculate that it might have been a terrorist attack then you should probably also speculate that a swarm of vengeful bees might have done it.

"90% under control now"

That's the line the Dubai authorities are giving.

It may be less intense, but it's clearly still burning, which is echoed by eyewitness comments. It does make you wonder whether the authorities are trying to play things down when they want the focus to be on the fireworks display they are about to unleash shortly.

I don't see how that was an ugly building?

They were all thrown up in the space of a few years, on an empty plot of sand, in a country that nobody wanted to go to.
The entire city has no more architectural merit than a Minecraft village.

Every other city in the world has history, each building either reflects its position in the landscape or defines that moment in time.
This is what Arabs don't get, they think you can buy taste with an excess of gold and marble - when in fact all that gets you is a Las Vegas Casino with better staff.

If it all burnt down tomorrow, nothing of worth would have been lost and nothing would be worth rebuilding. Everything about it is meaningless.

Yeah I really don't see how it's under control or how they can know nobody died.

I don't really mind them setting off the fireworks though, get it done and the crowd might leave.

I really hope that the fire safety and building evacuation procedures for that building were up to scratch, that's about the nightmare for any tall buildings.

Fortunately(?) it looks like it's mainly affecting one side of the building, which would be hopeful for a safe evac.

You would be surprised how quick fires can spread across floors, on the other side of the building I was still seeing flickers

Dubai authorities are headed by Comical Ali.

So no new building can have any beauty or architectural merit !
Dubai has some stunning buildings, Burj Al Arab Hotel is arguably one of the most beautiful buildings on earth let alone the cutting edge engineering involved in it's creation.

The removed comment looks far more like baiting than a reasoned response. He doesn't like the architecture so he's racist? Give it a rest. Gilly.

Your silly post says more about deep seeded bigotry and racism within you than it does about architecture imho.

i dont think that's what hes saying. but its not like an existing city, London, new york etc where when a new building goes up its a long process with lots of thought put into making it fit in and match up with the existing city. Because that happens with most of the buildings over hundreds of years it builds a sort of cohesion and personality to the city.

by throwing up a whole city in a few years its more just a few set pieces with a huge list of stock designs. theres not really a consistent or historic intermingling between the buildings. so it can all feel a bit robotic.
