Best Device of 2015

Nexus 6P and the iPhone 6S+

Sold the 6P yesterday saying that, I find the 6S+ to be massively better on battery life so that was the keeper for me.

Note 5 and V10 would have got a look but neither got released here in time so hey ho.

A good choice Andy, probably would have chosen the same

Glad you didn't jump on the "6p best phone ever" bandwagon like many other tech channels have, at £499 for the 64gb it's a crazy price for a stock Android device.

Note 5 n920c can be had for cheaper including import duty!

I've had g4, note 5 and 6p and for me it's all about value for money and stuck with the g4, incredible value to spec ratio, nothing comes close

Which would be a 32gb version though - apples and oranges.

Really!? How much better on battery? I knew it was better but didn't imagine it was such a huge gap....

Gotta new G4 leather brown Sim free incoming at £270, just couldn't pass up the value for money with the specs. That and the battery/no sd card thing has disappointed me with the S6, after happily owning s2, s3, note 3. Picked up two spare battery kits for £40 combined will result in going from 0 to 100 being a cinch.

Note 5 for me. Great all round performance and the N920C 64GB is a bargain if you choose to import one which many of us have done,

Can't compre as I've only owned the 6/6s plus but if it helps - I can google maps navigate a 300 mile trip with battery left to last the remainder of the day, easily.

You may find that changes over time. Going on past experience iPhones always start off very well with battery life and then folks tend to have issues with them rather quickly. Then again the 6S+ is a different kettle of fish with that battery size and SoC.

I'm not sure if there can be a best Android device of 2015 tbh. Personally I thought 2015 was a poor year due to somewhat lacklustre SoC's we've had from Qualcomm, which produced hardly the speediest of devices vs Apple's new additions. Hopefully the 820 will change that for 2016.

I moved away from a Note4 to a Nexus 6P for 2015 and the device itself (6P) has stunned me with a great camera (a first for a nexus) and a working fingerprint reader as well as a smooth, stock Marshmallow OS. Despite the 6P being one of the best devices I've owned, the Note4 betters it for display and battery life still so it hasn't really separated itself from the top end phones like most thought it would.

I think Apple this year nailed it with their A9 SoC and their 'S' class phones - the 6S and the 6S+. Both are blisteringly quick in every area and those pesky overdone iOS animations are lag free and smooth. The already famous camera quality went from superb to beyond superb. I have my doubts about battery life long-term though but in my opinion either of these 2 devices would fit in the best device of 2015.

Considerably, both in standby and usage. Doze does help but still doesn't compare the iPhone. I can literally hammer the 6S+ all day and it'll always get me through the day with charge spare. The 6P not so much.

For me personally, I think the Samsung Galaxy S6 due to its exceptional hardware and features. Obviously it has its drawbacks versus other devices though.

Pros:
  • Amazing camera performance
  • Exynos 7420 - Probably the best Android SoC around right now?
  • UFS 2.0
  • MST technology - I'm guessing this will be Samsung exclusive as it was Loop's technology?
  • Mobeam technology - Do any other non-Samsung phones have this?
  • Premium build quality

Further more, whilst I would prefer stock Android due to the uniformity and speedy OS updates, TouchWiz has improved vasty since the last time I used it on the Galaxy S2. Samsung have recently released a 6.0 beta and the UI is completely lag free now. I used to get stutters in animation intensive apps such as Google Play Newsstand, but now this app is completely fluid - definitely not a case of placebo effect. The fingerprint reader also became much faster with the 6.0 beta update.

I was tempted by the Nexus 6P as it has fixed everything that was wrong with prior Nexus handsets. However it's just too big for my liking after owning a Nexus 6 and I don't want to lose the Mobeam and MST features that Samsung have. I used the Mobeam stuff a lot and I think MST is a real selling point for Samsung Pay when it launches.

How many other devices has you used? For me the Note 5 has all that with a slightly better screen (bigger at least), an extra gig of RAM, better battery and maybe a slightly better camera (not sure, may be exactly the same) and a stylus for good measure.

There are probably two or three other devices I would go to before the S6 if I couldn't use a Note 5. The S6 is good, I just wouldn't put it top of the pile.

2015 for me was the year that most manufacturers decided that form was more important than function and putting a smaller battery in just to make it slim was a good idea. I think only LG avoided doing this. And no, I don't care if these devices have fast charging - that's no good if I'm out on the road and I don't want to carry an external battery pack.

Of all the Android phones I had in 2015, the one that ticked the most boxes for me was the LG G4. Will be interesting to see what they bring out with the G5.

I'd go for the Note 5 64GB.

I've yet to find anything it's let me down on.

Looks fab, works flawless & feels fantastic in the hand.

Battery & No SD card slot, Meh. It's no great shakes, I've got loads of storage left.

Nexus 6P is also a great phone. I have the 64GB & it's also got loads left.

Pure Android is nice but the few bells & whistles that the Note 5 gives make the N6P just feel half finished.

I have Nova on both & neither has any lag at all.

You're listing bigger as being better, but I mentioned in my post that the Nexus 6 I had was too big for me personally. Bigger isn't always better and I personally prefer a trade off of having a smaller battery in return for a smaller device. Cameras are exactly the same, the Note 5 also uses a mixture of either IMX240 or ICOCELL just like the S6 and lens aperture is also the same.

The Note 5 is just a larger sized S6 at the end of day and the bigger frame allows it to store a larger battery and S-Pen. Take those away and it's basically an S6 with 1GB of extra ram.
