No visible damage? From 6ft?

Do you mean no visible damage to the casing or the insides?

If you are a dab hand at taking things apart, I'd do that and see if there is any obvious damage to any internal components like PCB boards or connectors etc.

Strange cos my first guess would have been the HDD but you have already tried that. Maybe the power supply or disc drive are damaged?

Well after typing that message, I put the new PS4 HDD back into the new PS4...and now that one won't work!!

Is it possible that the faulty PS4 corrupted or damaged the HDD when testing to see if it worked?
Now both consoles have the exact same problem with either HDD installed. Brilliant!!

Yeah I've tried that with various USB sticks in all possible formats too and it just keeps saying to please insert a USB stick with the software on.

After 5-6 attempts to rebuild the database with the new PS4 and it's original HDD it finally worked. I've set it back up, re-installing games etc and it's working fine.

Not sure why it took quite a few attempts but i'll leave it alone now.

I'll have a play about with thee broken one, see if there are any visible signs of damage internally. If not, guess I can send it off somewhere for a repair quote/estimate and see if it's worth fixing that way.
I'm only going to be living in the UK another couple of weeks though but if I can get it fixed up at least I can just leave it for the odd time a year I return home for a week.

Once you remove a HDD from a PS4 and re-add them for whatever reason it treats them as new HDD and you need to re-install the firmware as it formats them soon as it detects that the HDD has been removed and re-inserted.

The PS3 did the very same thing. Very annoying.

Sony charged me £120ish to fix a ps3 out of warranty but the retailer paid half due to me quoting the SOGA. I could have gotten them to pay full but I live in Scotland and it died over 5 years but under 6 years so I wasn't really entitled to anything tbh so I took half.

However SOGA states it has to be a manufacturing defect that caused it so your claim would be false since you dropped it.

So sony will give you a refurb for £120 ish if they use the same pricing as last time. Unless you know someone local who is very well known or trusted I would go with sony. Once you open it yourself you won't be able to go to sony.

Yeah sorry I should have clarified - It was when trying to re-install the software and re-initial the HDD when it wasn't working. It just kept saying there was an error.

It worked eventually though.

Just re-installing it all again. :(

Yeah I could have tried to lie but at the end of the day I did drop it and in my experience of other instrumentation in manufacturing environments an investigation can usually discover if it was component failure or accidental damage.

I don't know any local places - just what came up on google (consolewizard etc) but to be honest I've never bothered to ever send things off for repair as I just buy new things.
New one only cost £299, and came with Fallout 4, Controller, Battlefront, Last of Us so by the time I sold all of those it only cost <£200 and it's brand new so the extra £80 was worth it.
If it'd cost anywhere around £120, I'll just give it away - let someone else do it if they so wish.

Consoles are almost a consumable item going on cost, and as you say with the bundled items the unit only cost you £200. I can blow that on a few nights out once you factor booze and food /taxis so £200 is not a lot.

January sale see Rory McIlroy PGA is on sale, I like golf games, I got the Golf Club but the performance (screen tearing) makes it a less enjoyable game then I'd hoped for.

Is Rory McIlroy PGA worth £22?

I quite like it. It's pretty much the same as the old ones but feels like it's lacking content. The game play is really easy now compared to previous years though.

Bit like NHL 15 then? I got NHL 16 - excellent game. hmm £22 I might take a punt on it.

I was going to get The Crew but I tried the demo and it was a dreadful game. then I looked at need for speed, but I've got tearaway in my basket and I might get PGA as well.

Thanks..

Got the game, downloaded it (really quickly as well I might add - PSN working better for downloading large games lately) and I have had a few goes with the various modes etc.. Its excellent. Graphics are great. I think its got 8 courses which is short but its well presented and very good gameplay.

Better then the golf club.. Shame it was released with low content as the core game is excellent so far.

Yes, I noticed that. I also think Sony might have implemented a new system like Valve where if you download the game from scratch, you get an updated version with patches included. When I reinstalled my games after upgrading the HDD, I didn't get any notifications for patches to be downloaded. All the games were the latest versions.

Yes, Sony seem to have implemented fully updated downloads of full games , so it skips downloading gbs of updates. It really helped.

It was about time IMO. Ps4 is super quick for installing disc based games, and now it's fairly quick dependent on internet speed for digital.. It's all good.

Hopefully this year we get folder content sorting and other new features...

I did the same with 'The Crew' - didn't rate the demo at all and decided it wasn't worth it, even if it does have monster trucks!

I've also been going round in circles with Tearaway, Mad Max, Transformers Destruction, Need for Speed Rivals (already have the latest NFS) and a couple of others.

Pure Pool was an instant purchase and already had lots of hours fun with it.

Finally plumped for Mad Max - hopefully it will be good...

Pure pool is excellent, was one of the first Ps4 games I got, and loved it. I still play it now and then...

Tearaway was good on Vita and my little girl will enjoy it. So for £15.99 got that, and I've been debating the new NFS game, still undecided on that one.

But yes the crew was IMO quite poor. It looked like a Ps3 game, and it wasn't a very stable framerate either.. Not very impressive at all.

Agree with the visuals for The Crew - apparently they have been improved for Wild Run but not sure if that has been implemented in the demo...

I'll probably get Tearaway eventually, once I've worked my way through my recent purchases and some of the older stuff I have building up! Bought Rayman in this sale and enjoying it so far (co-op with the wife).

I had already bought the new NFS when it was on offer recently I think. Haven't spent too much time on it so wouldn't want to give it a recommendation yet. I enjoy lots of racing games on PS4 and PC and despite poor reviews for F12015, I love the game and will be going for the platinum, which will only be my 3rd I think.

I crave a game like Split Second (one of my two existing platinums, Driveclub being the other!) that I had on the PS3 - an often overlooked cracker of a game...

The Crew had a visual upgrade at the same time they released Wild Run. You do not need Wild Run to get the visual updates the base game got it too.
