My mum has a Sony Vaio laptop that's about 3 or 4 years old and I just stuck and SSD in and installed Windows 10 and the speeds are much lower than those stated in the product description. The SSD in question is this Kingston that has speeds rated at 450mbs/450mbs.

Are those speeds to be expected on an old laptop?

Probably Sata 2 I imagine, half the speed of Sata 3. You probably won't notice that much in real world performance though.

Thanks guys. I cant find any specs for the laptop to confirm that its Sata II but I would imagine it is.

IIRC they changed the controller in the Kingston drives, yet still quote the old performance figures

This is another reason for speed drops on the V300 series. Kingston sent out samples for review then changed components on them making them much slower while still quoting the original speeds. There was quite a uproar about it but they still basically tell lies about the performance and get away with it.
