Advice please on a NAS

I just got the DS415play which supports transcoding and is 4-bay to replace my 2-bay Netgear which was ****ing me off (25mb/s reads was the fastest I ever saw it move data!)

It's fantastic - I've been swopping data around between drives in RAID1 while running 2 Time Machine backups and streaming to a TV and an iPad running Plex no problems at all. Did it just in time too as one of the 3TB drives in the Netgear which I ported over has just started to fail and originally I didn't have them RAIDed in the Netgear.

I have the 2 bay model of this and its fantastic.
It can also manage all your downloads (Torrents and Newsgroups).

Any of the synology play models will support transcoding.

Good choice to be honest. You can build a NAS (a mini itx board, a very small 4 drive case) for less than you can buy one of the off the shelf ones. The HP Microserver mentioned earlier is an even cheaper choice, these little Synology/QNAP devices are good for storing files and maybe running a webserver, but for the price I'd much rather have a proper server most of the time.

Edit: feel free to add me as a friend on PLEX, and I'll share my library on my cloud server with you :)

Thank you very much that is kind of you. What is your plex username?

Trying to decide myself weather to go for a 2 or 4 bay synology. The 415 play looks tempting but like you have my own built server to transcode if and when required. Are you still going to get yourself a nas for storage?

No decided to put 2 5tb WD reds in my machine my processor in our HTPC is the i5 4690 and is powerful enough if transcoding is needed. It has a benchmark of nearly 8000 so could do a few transcodes if needed according to the graph on what you need
