Giving your children an 'unusual' name

We went for Aubree for our daughter. One of just 52 born in 2013 so very unusual but not in the realms of chaviness or stupididty (we think!)

We don't actually know where we got it from, but there were none in 2012 and 66 in 2014 so a rising trend for that name?

I don't think it's a name we or she will regret :)

I always wanted to call my son (if I ever have one) Ælfrēd since it is a really really old English name (the old English version of the modern day name Alfred). It would be a nightmare trying to explain to people how to spell it though.

Plus some people would probably ask "why didn't you give your son an English name?" whilst being totally ignorant that the name was used in England pre-dating the Norman conquest.

It has a cool meaning as well :). "Elf counsel" or "wise elf".

It's a nice name, I like it.

Yes cool, if you're a level 50 mage WoW player.

Alfred is also a nice name though :)

Interesting, I know 3 Aubree's, all of which are male.

call him long dong and he'l be set for life ;)

On this note, my friend's Chinese name is Wei Long, and technically I'm Mr Hung.

I love the English names people come up with here. My favourite was Horse.

"Is that because your Chinese name has 馬 (horse) in it?"

"No, it's because my friends say I look like a horse!" (Said with some pride)

I have always wanted to know what happened to the "Lost" names. IE the Pre Christian/pre Norman Conquest native British ones.

People forget that most "Christian" Names are actually middle eastern in origin.

Gary...

Because apparently Gary is a name dying out in this generation, no one is calling their kids Gary any more! I know about 6 Gary's in my generation, but none in this current generation (I'm a Beaver leader and I've not seen the name for quite some time!)

Might be because of that Glittery Bloke !!

Friend in Aus called their son Garry - about 30 years ago !

On the Gee theme, I always wanted Garth, Gavin or Gareth for my son.. So I got 3 daughters instead !!

Yeah. It is an interesting question that unfortunately I don't know the answer to.

Now you've got me interested :). To Google I go!

Easy. We were invaded. Several times.

woke up this morning and had an idea for a name :)

#hashtag.... by the time he's in school every teacher will know how to say it/spell it. You can even add son plus number '1' (son1) if you thinking of adding to the brood at some point at the end to make it clear it's a boy and the first one born :)

or selfie or one of the instagram filter names....
