Marvin Minsky has died

Probably not big enough of a celebrity to get the usual OcUK fanfare here I'd imagine....

Everybody dies just a shame it's all about status these days :/

For people of a certain age Logo is likely to be the first computer language they were exposed to, the turtle he and papert developed our first robot.

He was no celeb for sure :) and it's true that everyone dies, just thought I'd mention a personal hero's passing here.

MIT seems to be a power house for new ideas. Why is that? They must be doing something right over there, something we should be emulating here in the UK.

I remember we had one at our primary school, they were great fun.

It's very likely that was what got me into my career :).

Nothing to do with status, all to do with recognition. Good people die every minute of every day, those who influenced people's life tend to get noticed by more people. Same as it ever was, not 'these days'.

Erm we do have good universities over here too you know...

I know we do, but there's been so much that has stemmed from MIT in recent decades and it has to be about the way they approach problems and think. The work environment ethic seems to provide more results than just about any other University on Earth. It's quite impressive. The UK needs to foster more environments that encourage diverse thinking in my opinion. We're good but we could do more. We should be given more funding.

What specifically are you basing this one?

Oxford, Cambridge and the LSE rate in top 10 most years I believe. I've been to MIT and Harvard and they are fascinating places with some incredible minds, but all Ivy Leagues are and so are Cambridge and Oxford for sure and some of the words greatest ever inventions have come from those places.

Not sure I understand your post. I'm saying MIT have managed to bring forward new idea's and technologies with a lot of success. Things like this:

They are able to skirt the edge of our own ignorance. I like the way they push the boundaries and provide possible answers to questions we ask.

Yes, they're a world class university we also have some world class universities, so I'm not really sure what you're specifically getting at?

Read about MIT a lot, its pretty legendary. Didnt know of Mr. Minsky especially but of course the old turtle logo, though we never had the actual turtle just the manual for it :p

What I'm saying is that MIT have managed to create a place where minds come together and collide. The results speak for themselves. Quantum computing will be a game changer.

I'm still not sure what you're trying to argue, yes MIT are a world class university... you can say similar things about other world class universities.

'What I'm saying is that Oxford have managed to create a place where minds come together and collide.'

'What I'm saying is that Cambridge have managed to create a place where minds come together and collide.'

etc..
