Hot hatch for £6k

There's no need to tell me to "behave myself" I put it forward as an obscure suggestion knowing that it would probably be overlooked, I mentioned its pitfalls myself, and I even said the money would probably be better spent elsewhere. And yet people still pick holes in things for no reason.

Don't be offended or act so defensively. You put forward a suggestion, admitted it was severely flawed, and shouldn't be surprised that people are agreeing its flawed in an attempt to steer the OP in, their opinion, much better direction.

Do you own one of these cars, is that why your back is so far up?

In a straight line, they can compete. Around a good set of bends? Not so much, they feel decent, but comparatively boaty and disconnected. I never claimed otherwise.

However I'm not sure how it could be described as "sedate" - because it is far from sedate. It is loud and ridiculous and buzzy and fast. You could describe it as compromised, yes. Sedate? No.

I own a cheap £1600 regular T-Sport which is having TLC applied. I would rather have most of the cars mentioned in this thread, but it was a good cheap quick car.

Honestly I'm not the worlds biggest fan of it despite owning one, but in my opinion the Compressor is a bit special...

Like I said, OP, get a Mazda 3 MPS, Golf MK5 GTi, Focus ST225 etc. Apparently I'm not allowed to make a wildcard suggestion in a motors thread without receiving undue flak.

I did look at a corolla compressor a while back and decided against it, they do sound great though, although that probably has something to do with the fact that it's the only car I have ever drive that has had a supercharger.

I always wished they had supercharged the celica, used to love the handling but it needed some low down torque.

Now if the responses had been like that, instead of discarding the Compressor as a hopeless slow old boat, it would have been fine!

Forgive me, I've not had a great evening...

It is absolutely hopeless beside an fn2 (or worse to an extent ep3), focus St, Mazda mps, Clio 182, mk5 gti etc etc

It is not hopeless compared with a celica, st170, mk1 Leon cupra etc etc - those are its competition, it's about as simple as that

I don't suggest that all and sundry should buy an fn2 because I have one, or Skoda because I've just bought one, or BMW because basically they're what I like etc etc.

Sometimes the enthusiasm is a bit.....much and misguided

I'm not getting into this debate... It has been proven otherwise time and time again, but people still think otherwise. Even if there is proof in front of their stubborn faces that it can stay side by side with a Civic Type R FN2 or EP3, people still claim that demnons must be behind it.

Its almost as if the dull Corolla badge clouds the brain.

One example out of the many I found from a quick Google... :/

Oh, I should mention that is the non supercharged 190HP version.

Lol OK then, I've driven them - either Honda would muller the thing round corners and I have eyes, I can see the interior

PS I like Toyota's, and I love mr2's

Yes, I've agreed with that and stated it myself at least twice now?

I never want this debate to happen, but I will have it if people make false claims, because it annoys me. I'm not sure if you've noticed... :p

Where have I made false claims? I've told you in no uncertain terms it can't compete with anything here - which it can't.

Forget straight line acceleration, it's largely irrelevant when all the cars have broadly similar power to weight ratios

I've told you its worth considering for a couple of grand, which it is. It is not a very good car, it is a very average car that offers good value in most guises

I'm not allowed to make a wildcard suggestion in a motors thread without receiving undue flak.

If your suggestion cannot stand up to light scrutiny, then its not the best of suggestions is it :p

Undue flak? Gosh, I would hate to see how you react to someone actually coming hard at you with vicious forum posts the likes of which are banned on here! Life threatening stuff this posting business.

I know it can't compete overall, I've said that... Im really confused... Its like you're deaf or seeing what you want to see so that you can have a little tiff.

Indeed you are!

One always tries to be to the point and as factual as possible, if that's an issue then apologies

I don't know what I've done exactly, but the mere fact that I make posts at all seems like enough for some of you to target me. Shove off!

Lol, time.to grow up

Anyway, 2 years ago I was in a similar situation, had a 7k budget, wanted a hot hatch which was physically larger then my 2006 polo gti.

At the time I looked at:

Leon FR (the cupra were quite a bit more money for a decent one at the time)
Mk5 golf gti
Type R FN2
Focus ST
I briefly thought about the astra VXR, but I had previously owned a 56 reg 1.9cdti astra hatch and HATED the interior so that was strait off the list.

They were all good cars in their own way, the civic was the most fun to drive, but the lack of low down grunt would probably bother me too much when wanting to drive lazily.

The golf and Leon were pretty similar (obviously), but neither were as fun as the focus, which sounded glorious, the engine alone pretty much won me over.

I have a mk3.5 focus ST now and really miss the engine sound of the old one.

Anyway I am biased so I would say if you don't care about fuel economy too much, get a focus ST, it's a good combination of being relaxing to drive if you want a calm commute, with the ability to give you fun when you want to.

I'm afraid I can't really pass judgement on the other cars mentioned in this thread as I have little to no experience with them.

The above is probably the best option actually, I forgot about those!

It may not be "technically better" than the popular choice - an EP3 Type R

Admittedly however they are a bit fickle, the gearbox is silly, and £4.5K is too much unless you take into account their rarity.

You'd probably be better with one of the options already recommended. :)

In a straight line, they can compete. Around a good set of bends? Not so much, they feel decent, but comparatively boaty and disconnected. I never claimed otherwise.

I mentioned its pitfalls myself, and I even said the money would probably be better spent elsewhere.

Clearly the Corolla was my only suggestion too!

MK5 GTI would also be in budget. As would a Focus ST225. :)

You might get a Golf R32 for 6K too

Oh of course, an Octavia VRS is another! :)

Or an RX8 for £2K - £3K so you have change for the engine re-build at some point during your ownership.

Or a nice EP3 with A/C!

I don't know what I've done exactly, but the mere fact that I make posts at all seems like enough for some of you to target me. Shove off!

I'm going to bed now, I've had enough.

I would go with the ST Op should get a decent 2007 ST3 with about 70k on for 6. Comfy leather Recaro's and easily modified to 300bhp if u wanted

You can get them for £4.5K.

Remember that the Compressor is the one I recommended, which has the following additions over the standard T-Sport:

- Supercharger
- Twin exit exhaust
- TTE shocks and TTE -20MM springs (Eibach)
- Wider 17" wheels
- Underside re-enforcement members
- Damped front strut brace (also fitted to facelift T-Sports)

It may not be "technically better" than the popular choice - an EP3 Type R - but it is quicker in a straight line, it has a beautiful SC whine, and it is a far more interesting and rare car.

Or buy a EP3 CTR for £2k, add a supercharger and then see what wins in a straight line. Also, the CTR would laugh at a Corolla in the corners, they shouldn't even be compared in the corners.

Behave yourself, they're worth nothing like the money the OP is willing to spend and nearly everything mentioned here is a better car

There's no need to tell me to "behave myself" I put it forward as an obscure suggestion knowing that it would probably be overlooked

Can you both "behave yourselves", and anyone else chipping in on this argument.

Acme made a valid suggestion (amongst others that he suggested) - whether others agree, then it's up to the OP to accept or reject it.
Rodenal, you made a valid point on price, but other than that no need to keep digging.

Can we have this back on topic please - feel free to critique some of the other suggestions - but the Corolla has been done unless the OP has anything to add.

There's 6 Corolla compressors on AT in the whole country, unless someone really wanted one they wouldn't go to the trouble of finding one.

Or buy a EP3 CTR for £2k, add a supercharger and then see what wins in a straight line. Also, the CTR would laugh at a Corolla in the corners, they shouldn't even be compared in the corners.

It makes me feel old knowing you can get an EP3 for £2k, I always wanted one but couldn't afford it 10 years ago, and now I could buy one I have a much better car, but still want to have owned one because of how I used to feel. Weird feeling.
