In my opinion it is. I really enjoyed that game. It was something different. I played it up until June last year whereas I'm already getting bored of this game.
I didn't think BO2 was as good as BO1 and I don't think this game is either. I think it's the map designs. Treyarch have gone from quite big, open maps to small, cluster **** maps with head glitch spots on every corner. Grid, WMD, Crisis and Radiation are better than any map in BO2 or this game.
I'll not disagree with you about the maps, those maps you listed from BO1 were fantastic.
The verticallity of AW and the gun variants destroyed that game for me, that's even before we get into the total crapfest that was the support from SHG after the game launched for wall breach spots and the constant trolling by Condrey on twitter. Then there was the ASD's.

Higher level players don't have more armour.
To be honest, its not even the case that the best guns are the high level ones. THe KN44 assault rfile is one of the best in the game, likewise the VMP.
Both of which are available from the start I think
I agree about the gun variants and ASD's but the core gameplay was loads of fun and I was one of the few people that actually enjoyed the advanced movements in the game. One thing I don't understand is how this game actually doesn't look as nice as AW did
Boots on the ground. The advanced movement stuff was stupid. I'm enjoying Bo3, but would enjoy it more if they could get the game to play consistently. I'm not going to pretend i know whats happenning, but you can feel the game plays differently depending on how the players connections / servers / pings etc.. all work out.
If they could get it to play well consistently like it does in the good games, it would be a lot more enjoyable.
That said, the last COD i bought before BO3 was BO2. Ghosts and AW were both just trash.

Because Treyarch, there games always looked a little rougher around the edges.
I have all the SMG's, LMG's, AR's and two shot guns, literally can't see me getting anymore other than the launchers. I'd be pulling my hair out using snipers or trying to get headshots with the fully auto shotguns.
im gunna go for it, keeps me playing then. ive only had the game since thursday (bought xbox last week) so still finding my feet in terms of console gaming again.
I think the VMP is the first unlock, level 6?
Cheers for that. nightrider1470 is level 9 so should have that available. Give it a try !
Oh and one other tip, stick with a gun and start unlocking the attachments for it. One thing that higher rank players will have is a better idea of which attachments improve the gun and have them all unlocked.
Focus on staying alive before running around like a headless chicken. Once you start getting more familiar with the maps you can go in guns blazing. Oh and the standard classes are great if you just want to try stuff out.
According to IGN I'm wrong. They say both the Kuda and the VMP are unlocked to start with, I thought it was only the one. Never mind.
You are doing well! I completed the launchers some time ago and only finished SMG's last week or the week before but I am nowhere on AR's or LMG's. Aren't snipers and shotgun camo's based on getting OHK's rather than headshots? Still getting OHK's with the auto shotties wouldn't be so bad, OHK range is terrible but use it long enough I'm sure you would get them. I would hate the semi auto sniper though as it only OHK's to the head and I usually die while lining up the shot 
Trying to work my way through the snipers now - got gold on SVG/Locus, but absolutely hate using the Drakon and P-06, so this may take a while
Will probably never get it on SMG/AR/LMG's as I've only used like 6 of them all in total!
i managed the drakon in 2 evenings play time, may have been 1 but i wasnt a high enough level to unlock 5 attachments. rapid fire seemed to help.
Some shotguns are OHK's others are head shots, I forget which.
I think that means the 0.0001% chance I had of being bother to get dark matter just went out the window too.
