08 Ford Focus 1.6 Petrol too slow

1.6 Focuses were never designed with speed as a main factor. Then again, I've had a couple and they've never been particularly "slow". They're nippy enough for their purpose.

The Mk1 was quick enough with the 1.6 engine, the Mk2 onwards is a bloated slug. There is no simple fix to make it quicker apart from selling it and buying something more powerful/lighter.

Bit of an odd post from op. What do u expect from a run of the mill hatchback with a 1.6 engine? You should have bought the 1.6 ti Vct engine with 115bhp instead of the 99bhp variant as it feels more nippy.
The Focus is plenty fast enough for city everyday driving and still quicker than Fiesta's and Corsa's etc.
If your not happy put another 1k towards a 2006 ST Focus! Remap = 265bhp :D

I had a petrol Focus 1.6 for a while and it wasn't too bad. About as low performance as I could manage though.

Slow as in not meeting the spec of it or slow as in "It's just so slow" ?

For example, would giving it a full service (Plugs, filters etc) make any better?

Evening all,

Scraping the barrel here. Bought a ford Focus back in May, and it's too slow :p Searched remaps but the one i found literally gives a gain of 9bhp :(

I'm aware there's not much I can do to it, but surely there must be something I can do :p

Please advise :)

Points to note: Getting a new car is currently not an option :p

Ridiculous post is ridiculous.

Full service including plugs, full stainless exhaust with de-cat pipe, cold air intake and cone air filter, 98 octane petrol and a re-map to make the best of all the modifications.

Will cost you £1000, will ruin your insurance, and will get you maybe 20HP...

I'd say thats about the same as "no" :D

You'll be wasting your money trying to get any more power out of it. Trade it in for one with a bigger engine or get on with it.

I have a mkII 1.6 focus and I feel your pain, it is a slow old girl which I don't mind too much but it don't half rev high for slow speeds, whats a good rev range for them? I find if I get to around 35mph its screaming for me to go into 5th with the revs over 2000rpm. that's more annoying than being slow to pull away imo.

You should be able to feel where it has the most usable power. :)

I suspect it will be between 3000 - 4000RPM. But I understand why you wouldn't want to drive it like that much! :p

I've found a method of making basically every car I've ever driven faster, it's completely infallible.

I like to call it the "going down a hill" method, and it involves going down a hill.

You could put much smaller wheels/tyres on, and that way the speedo would read a bit higher than the car is actually travelling - that way you could pretend it's going faster?

Other than that, not going to happen I'm afraid!

My mk1 Focus feels like it would stall in 5th at that speed and can quite happily drive around at those speeds in 3rd or 4th with hardly any engine noise...

I don't think she'd live much longer if I did that to her haha. she's ten years old now.

I wonder if she's poorly then? I wouldn't even know where to start to diagnose that.

Probably want to check the oil then. Mine is 13 years old and always used right up and down the rev range, doesn't burn any oil and doesn't sound like a cat being strangled.

I find people are too keen to get in the highest gear as quickly as possible even when accelerating, I don't have much power but if I need to build up speed quickly I'll just take it up to 4-5k if I have to.
