Closed Back headphones for work in the office iPhone and oppo HA-2 DAC

Reading reviews they say the DT770 is very bass heavy..

While I don't mind this in gaming for music I prefer more neutral bass...

AKG 550 Mk2....V Audio technica AH-M50X

Neither of those are "Neutral" Assuming by neutral you mean most linear? The 770 is closer to neutral than those two headphones when it comes to bass IMO.

The 770 has a more reverby bass because of the housing.

I think the reviews are a bit subjective and I've been bitten with mis representations of bass/treble responses.

- The ATH-M50X has slightly more exaggerated bass, and having had a set, I can confirm the bass tends to affect the lower-mids a bit and that makes it sound muddier
- The DT770 80ohm vs DT770 600Ohm show that the higher impedence beyers do have subdued bass. My 250' ohms are great, reasonably light bass by default but they do EQ amazingly well and with a headphone AMP you can have as much or little bass as you want, they can handle as much as you can throw at them, far far more than my ears can handle and it stays well controlled at higher SPL
- The AKGs are a bit laid back at the high end, which may or may not suit people, the DT770's I'd class as detailed rather than overly bright.

Of course frequency response does not indicate other attributes (Soundstage, imaging etc), but I am starting to be able to at least use it to know roughly if it'll suit my ears or not..

Depends really if you prefer on ear or over ear, For on ear Id recommend the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X

For over ear I'd probably go with the Beyerdynamic DT770, The 990's are great but are open so a lot of sound leakage so they are out of the question..

Overall the 770s are a tried and tested rock solid choice. The custom one pro's would also be a great choice, but I'd personally go with the 770s.The ATH-M50X's are awesome but I'm not a fan of on ear cans myself personally.

DT770 if you want to block everyone out whilst listening to stuff. Numerous times people have had to come upto me and tap me on the shoulder as I haven't heard them shout my name.

Headrooms graphs are a bit of a hit and miss but going by those graphs the AKG measures the best but it's biggest issues has always been housing, distortion and tonal balance. I has that upper mid glare that can make voices sound wrong.

The 770 in that graph has more bass than the M50x when it comes to the mid bass which will make it sound bassier than the M50x. All m50's and M50x always measure more balanced than they sound for some reason.

That 600ohm graph is one of the worst I've ever seen! no bass, metallic sounding by the looks of it! one thing that does save almost all the Beyers is their housing creates this reverb thunderous bass that mask's a lot of it's upper end problems.

Out of curiosity what office jobs do people have that they are allowed to wear headphones? Seen it in a few threads now

I'm also looking for some headphones for work now, I'm a software engineer working in a large office with multiple different projects going on. I do spend a fair bit of time discussing things with other team members but it's pretty common for me to need to just get my head down and focus on a problem/task for a couple of hours without distraction and so listening to music helps me focus. I'd say at least 50% of the people in here have headphones on at some point or another.

Think I'll take a punt on the DT 770 pro...If I don't like them I'll return them..

What Ohm should I go for ? The 250ohm version?

All I can say is my 250Ohms are certainly bass light out the box (compared to the Senn Momentums for example), but with EQ, they can punch better and lower by a degree as they scale really well with an AMP.

But they are harder to drive, the HA2 should be OK, but might be running at it's limit a little if you crank up the volume.

I'm using the HA-2 with some HD650 300 ohms without issue...:)

Senn Momentums are out of budget mate..

As I say I have the HD650 for home and want something for 100 for work.

recently aquired some dt770 pro 250's from the mm not too bass heavy imo actually quite nice perfect for work.

they will go very loud and deep but at acceptable levels on the X7 they are a solid choice.

I missed out on them...Just ordered a set myself...Listening to them now...

Think I'll keep them for the price they are very nice phones....

This now makes me want to try out the DT 990 and compare them to the senn 650 I just bought...

These DT770 are mega comfy as well out the box!

DT770 Pro are the least leaky headphones I've ever owned - in or out.

I passed mine on to a musician who wanted them for monitoring with zero leakage while recording vocals. He's happy with them.

Mine were the 250 ohm. Certainly not bass light as long as they are adequately amped.

I found EQing my 770's to flatten them out (the inverse of the blue plot I posted earlier in the thread (Which are the 250ohm DT770s)) has really brought the mids forward and improved things no end..

The momentums are packaged ready to go back, they just can't match the beyers for sheer oomph and control at higher volumes and they can't be tamed with EQ since the roll off is so extreme at the mid-high end.

Yeah I've never felt the 770's are as elevated as the actual graphs I find it's the housing that creates that big oomh. As far as closed backs under £200 the 770 has some of the most natural bass IMO.

The highs are very crisp....

I like them... But comparing them with my hd650 they make the vocals on tango in the night album..."Family man" sound grainy....

Not sure wether to keep them or not...

Explain matey....what do you like more about them ?

So I found the DT770 to be too bassy and it felt bloated. I also found they had a distinct lack of midrange, so basically a lot of bass and top end but nothing much in the middle.

They are very comfortable and as you probably well know, bomb proof and whilst the AKG's are also very well made, they do need a good fit round the ears to get the best sound and therefore are a bit picky with placement.

But for closed back they do sound spacious and I think quite natural, nothing is emphasised. Vocals sound really good.
