I have a Focus ST which is group 16 insurance and only worth 5k. My insurance is due start of March and i have been doing quotes on all the compare sites for the last few weeks.
I am late 20's and have a clean license with 6yrs no claims. Now the cheapest quote i have had with a £500 excess is £800 :eek:
And that's before i throw legal protection and breakdown on! Its ridiculous!
I try to get insurance with decent companies such as Churchill, LV or Elephant etc as i have heard too many horror stories of lesser companies being an absolute nightmare which i cannot be bothered with. And i always change my car every 12 months so its always mid way through a policy which i prefer to be dealt with in an easy manner and have no extortionate fee's for changes.
Now the main thing i was going to do was get my car modded soon. Seems like vast amount of drivers remap there Turbo cars these days and when i tried that for a quote its a 25% increase
How the hell does anyone Mod there car without getting bent over big time by insurance companies
So does anyone have any experience/know any insurers that are reasonable for my type of car and dont have a meltdown when you mention modifying?
thanks

You just need to check pretty much every single insurer you can think of to see who gives a sent sensible quote.

Remapping does typically take it up, for me it makes about 50% of the percentage power increase in terms of additional cost (I.e a 20% power increase=10% premium) that's with Chris Knott

Greenlight always seem to find an excuse not to quote for either my area (a "good" postcode) or car, and tbh I don't like the attitude if their staff. That said, to some extent price can make up for it

Greenlight - They don't charge for modifications.

If you're a member of FocusSTOC then you'll get a further discount too.
I have heard of them are they any good? there website is very sparse and there call center shuts at 1pm on saturday and closed sunday

I am shocked that a remap/Bluefin superchips causes such a rise in price? The majority of Turbo diesel or Hot hatch owner's seem to have a map of some sort and i very much doubt that the average owner will accept a 25% hike in policy prices! most of the bigger companies wont even quote me if i mention about wanting a remap let alone an intercoooler or bigger air filter etc lol.

I find Flux utterly useless on anything mildly interesting even with club discounts, best for me seems to be Sky Insurance, generally good with mods for me.

Plenty of other specialist companies out there though if you look around, HIC, APlan too off the top of my head.

lol one of the worst when it comes to any issues

try aplan the guy you need is dan . hes the main guy on all car forums and gives great service .a plan cut my premium on my gtr when i had it in half from what flux was offering .

hes on passion ford forum under the insurance section cant miss it

Flux charge for everything, surprised they aint started charging for just ringing them.

Ive been with greenlight for 5 years now and they're good. The guys there know their cars and you will end up having a half hour chat talking about each others motors lol.

Never charged me for changing things (mods/Plates etc)

Shame they dont insure BMW's or i would be staying with them.

Um, i bet they don't!

I bet there's far more than u think! Have u seen the ST forums a remap seems to be the first mod all the ST225 owners get as many feel it's to lethargic without one.
And when i was looking round about insurance increases with a remap/bluefin Google was full of threads from VW and Audi owners talking about remap's on there TDI, TfsiTSI engines etc and many trying to convince each other its untraceable so no need to declare it
I only have to look at half the diesels on the road farting black smoke out aswell

I've heard Flux can be hit and miss and charge for everything. So I'll call Greenlight, Sky and Chris Knott tommorow hoping they give me a good quote :D

remember to price match them all, Greenlight and Sky will beat each other.

I used Greenlight for years with my Mountuned Focus ST and then my Fiesta ST. I switched to Skyinsurance last year because it was about £100 cheaper and with £0 voluntary excess too! Both are good.

Skyinsurance do have "admin" changes for some things (like changing address), Greenlight don't. Both have a 15k miles per year limit.

Another vote for Greenlight. The customer service is second to none. Having a personal contact through various club forums is fantastic and you can list reels of mods off without any problem with the premium plus they offer track day insurance @ £45 per day.

I am not with them at the moment as I went with Performance Direct (Complete cowboys) but will be changing to them next year. £100 more expensive than my current policy but sometimes it is worth paying that little extra for the service.

Just for reference Greenlight offered me £348 for a Modified Toyota Celica GT-Four, 29 years old with 8 years no claims and a mod list as long as my arm @ 330BHP/30% increase in power.

This.

I didn't even shop around this year after talking to them. They may have been a bit more expensive but the lack of hassle with mods is a godsend. No admin fees, can message them on forums and they add mods to your policy. I quizzed them about future mods and they wouldn't ever put the price up.

Track day insurance for £35 and in the event of a claim they replace all mods.

Spoke to Neil and Will and they were both great. Nice to speak to someone who knew what an inter cooler was...

The people on the car forums... are not your average owners!

I can recommend Chris Knott, have my insurance through them and have modifications. The policy is underwritten by a large insurer and so I pay a bit more (£50-100pa) than I would otherwise via others, but, worth it for the peace of mind.

The key thing with insurance is not just the value of your car, but, the damage you can cause with it to others. If you want to have a 'hot hatch' with modifications at a reasonably young age, you are sadly going to pay a fair bit for it...

How do u mean the policy is underwritten by a large insurer? Are all these companies mentioned just brokers are they? So your not actually insured with say Chris Knott or Greenlight etc?
